The Tsavo Man Eaters

The Tsavo Man Eaters were a pair of man-eating lions in the Tsavo region, which were responsible for the deaths of a number of construction workers on the Kenya-Uganda Railway between March and December 1898.

The significance of this lion pair was their unusual behavior of killing men and the manner of their attacks.

John List

List, was an American mass murderer and long-time fugitive. On November 9, 1971, he killed his wife, mother, and three children at their home in Westfield, New Jersey, then disappeared; he had planned the murders so meticulously that nearly a month passed before anyone suspected that anything was amiss.

Other films, inspired include the 1993 film Judgment Day: The John List Story, in which List was portrayed by Robert Blake; the 1987 film The Stepfather and its 2009 remake, and the character Keyser Soze in the 1995 film The Usual Suspects.

The Beast of Gevaudan

The Beast of Gevaudan, is the historical name associated with a man-eating animal or animals which terrorized the former province of Gévaudan (consisting of the modern-day département of Lozère and part of Haute-Loire), in the Margeride Mountains of south-central France between 1764 and 1767.

The attacks, which covered an area spanning 90 by 80 kilometres (56 by 50 mi), were said to have been committed by one or more beasts with formidable teeth and immense tails, according to contemporary eyewitnesses.

Most descriptions from the period identify the beast as a wolf, dog, or wolf-dog hybrid.

The Afflicted (2011)
Theresa Knorr

The 2010 horror film, The Afflicted (also titled Another American Crime) is loosely based on the Theresa Knorr case.

The film follows the real-life events through a substantially-compressed timeline. Unlike the real case, the movie ends with the youngest daughter killing her mother and one of her brothers before committing suicide.

Ed Gein

The film, for the most part is based on the story of Ed Gein, the infamous "Butcher of Plainview", who had killed two people.

Later police found bodies, that were exhumed from local grave sites, and even were used for decorations.

Gein's murders were also inspiration for films such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Psycho, Deranged, and many other films.

Ronald DeFeo, Jr.

On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed six members of his family at 112 Ocean Avenue, a large Dutch Colonial house situated in a suburban neighborhood in Amityville, on the south shore of Long Island, New York. He was convicted of second-degree murder in November 1975.

In December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz and their three children moved into the house. After 28 days, the Lutzes left the house, claiming to have been terrorized by paranormal phenomena while living there.

Some however, have suggested that the Lutz's story, was marely made to sell a potential book, and profit off of it.

Psycho (1960)
Ed Gein

Psycho is based on Robert Bloch's 1959 novel of the same name, which was loosely inspired by the case of convicted Wisconsin murderer and grave robber Ed Gein.

Both Gein, who lived just 40 miles from Bloch, and the story's protagonist, Norman Bates, were solitary murderers in isolated rural locations. Each had deceased, domineering mothers, had sealed off a room in their home as a shrine to her, and dressed in women's clothes. However, unlike Bates, Gein is not strictly considered a serial killer, having been charged with murder only twice.

The Blob (1958)
Believe it or not, The Blob is based on a New York Times article from 1950 titled, "A ‘Saucer’ Floats to Earth And a Theory Is Dished Up." The story followed four Philadelphia police officers who came into contact with a strange gooey material, which is now believed to be "Star Jelly," a transparent gelatinous substance. When one of the officers tried to move the goo, it started to dissolve and evaporate, so there was nothing to show the FBI when they arrived on the scene except a spot on the ground.

Annabelle (2014)
Ed and Lorraine Warren

Annabelle is a Raggedy Ann doll alleged by demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren to be haunted. The doll resides in a glass box at The Warrens' Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut.

The story served as the inspiration for the films The Conjuring, Annabelle, and the upcoming, Annabelle 2. Annabelle has been compared to Robert the Doll and was described in Gerald Brittle's 2002 biography of Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Demonologist.

John Du Pont

Based on the death of Olympic gold medal wrestler, Dave Schultz by John Du Pont, in 1996.

Du Pont was also a philanthropist and heir to the Du Pont family fortune.

John Du Pont is also the only member of the Forbes 400, to be convicted of murder.

Despite being a dark comedy, the film is based on the true story of murders, theft, and extortion by Noel Doorbal , Daniel Lugo, John Mese, John Raimondo, and Jorge Delgado.

Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate

Between 1957-1958, both Starkweather and Fugate, had killed at least eleven people, three of them were Fugate's family members.

The films, Kalifornia, Badlands, The Frighteners, and The Sadists were based on or inspired by the killings.

Fargo (1996)
The Woodchipper Murder

Allegedly, the film is partially based on the murder of Helle Crafts, by her husband Richard Crafts, in 1986.

Many Minnesotans also speculated, that the story was inspired by T. Eugene Thompson, a St. Paul attorney who was convicted of hiring a man to murder his wife in 1963, near the Coens' hometown of St. Louis Park.

Ed and Lorraine Warren

The Enfield Poltergeist is the name given to the claims of poltergeist activity at a council house in Brimsdown, Enfield, England from 1977 to 1979 involving two sisters, ages 11 and 13.

It was eventually, investagated by Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Some however, feel it was a hoax.

Shadow People (2013)
According to the filmmakers, their film was based on a viral video called Sleep Study GR16 1971, plus certain cultural beliefs that 'shadow people' are responsible for something called Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome.

Stewart and Cyril Marcus

Twins Stewart and Cyril Marcus were gynaecologists who were found dead in 1975 having suffered withdrawal from their barbiturate addiction. Cronenberg read about the brothers in Ron Rosenbaum's essays and took elements of their story for his movie.

Benchley's book was inspired by the story of fisherman Frank Mundus, who caught a great white shark in Long Island in 1964. Other writers also claim that Benchley drew inspiration from a spate of shark attacks in Jersey Shore in 1916.

Quint's story about sailors being attacked by sharks, actually happened in real life.

The USS Indianapolis sunk in 1945. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship.

The remaining 900 faced exposure, dehydration, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks while floating with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of a PV-1 Ventura on routine patrol. Only 317 survived.

Snowtown (2011)
John Bunting

The 'Snowtown murders' were carried out by John Bunting and his crew between 1992 and 1999. In total 11 people were tortured and killed. The crimes were covered up by Bunting, who forced his victims to leave voicemail messages to relatives telling them that they were going away
Ed Gein and Ted Bundy

Author Thomas Harris based Buffalo Bill on a number of serial killers, including Ed Gein (skinning his victims) and Ted Bundy (using a cast to lure in innocent women). Harris also based the relationship between Starling and Lecter on that between Bundy and Robert Keppel, a criminal profiler and professor at the University of Washington.

The Texarkana Moonlight Murders

A spate of murders in the 1940s, called the Texarkana Moonlight Murders, were carried out by the so-called Phantom Killer. Over a ten week period, the Phantom Killer murdered eight people... and the culprit was never found. Shudder.

Wes Craven wrote the script for this after getting inspired by the legend of Alexander 'Sawney' Bean, the head of a 16th Century clan of cave-dwellers. They lived there for 25 years, chowing down on an estimated 1,000 people before they were found out and killed.

Writer/director Meir Zarchi took inspiration from one of his own experiences in Central Part in 1974. There, he came across a woman who had been raped and beaten, but when he took her to the police, she was allegedly treated unfairly. Zarchi stated that the character of Jennifer Hills came out of that incident: she's somebody who deals with her attackers without relying on the law.

Directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud based their film on the case of an Austrian couple who were staying at their Romanian holiday home when they were attacked and killed by three teenagers.

A legend titled The Black Monk of Pontefract, which tells of a poltergeist haunting that took place in 1974, one of the most violent ever recorded. Joe and Jean Pritchard reported poltergeist activity in their home in Pontefract. As well as objects moving around their home, they also saw a hooded apparition.

Audrey Rose (1977)
Things only get weirder when you look into the creation of Frank De Felitta's novel, on which this is based. Felitta's six-year-old son could play the piano perfectly, despite the fact that he'd never had a single lesson in his short life. The bizarre development led Felitta to contact an occultist and resulted in the author's belief in reincarnation.

William Burke and William Hare

The Burke and Hare murders were a series of 16 murders committed over a period of about ten months in 1828 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The killings were undertaken by William Burke and William Hare, who sold the corpses to Doctor Robert Knox for dissection at his anatomy lectures.

Jack the Ripper is easily one of England's most famous serial killers, even though nobody knows exactly who he was. During 1888, Jack was responsible for five murders, and his identity still remains a mystery. Which of course makes him perfect fodder for horror movies.

While Vlad Tpse, himself was NOT a real vampire, he did kill alot of people in battle, and had impaled apparently thousands of people, as warning to those dared to cross him.

The Mothman

Author John Keel's book was inspired by his own investigations into the Mothman in Point Pleasant in 1966 and 1967. In the book, he eventually links his detective work with that of others, in particular the Silver Bridge Collapse in 1967.

Chante Jawan Mallard hit a 37-year-old homeless man with her car in 2001 and left the man stuck in her windshield, trapped in her garage. Mallard was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Open Water (2004)
Tom and Eileen Lonergan

Open Water is based on American tourists Tom and Eileen Lonergan, a couple who were lost at sea when their tour group left them behind while scuba diving near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia in 1998. When the diving company realized the mistake two days later, they organized a search party, but the Lonergans were never found. The only thing that was found was a diver's slate (an underwater communication device) with a S.O.S. message on it that read, "[Mo]nday Jan 26; 1998 08am. To anyone [who] can help us: We have been abandoned on A[gin]court Reef by MV Outer Edge 25 Jan 98 3pm. Please help us [come] to rescue us before we die. Help!!!"

Based on a real cult leader Adolfo de Jesús Constanzo, this movie has gory details of how human sacrifice was practiced by the cult. Spoiler: Toes. fingers and even brain were cut out by him, and you can watch all of that in this movie.
The plot of this movie is not new. You buy a new place to live and you are not happily received by the ghosts. What is scary is that we know this really happened to Al and Carmen Snedeker who had their house over a funeral parlor.

Like stories on exorcism and the devil? Based on the life of one of the most famous exorcists of America, Father Gary Thomas, this movie will scare the hell out of you. One piece of advice: Don't try this alone.
Henry Lee Lucas

The film's character, was based on Henry Lee Lucas, who proclaimed to have killed nearly 600. Roughly one murder a week between his release from prison in 1975 to his arrest in 1983.

While the film was inspired by Lucas' confessions, the vast majority of his claims turned out to be false.

Lucas, however was convected of 11 murders, by state officials.
