Had to be sent to the MPAA 10 times before they avoided the NC-17 rating. They requested that Wes Craven make lots of cuts, and at one point Wes Craven lied to the MPAA that the opening Barrymore scene had only one take, and thus couldn't be edited. Eventually Bob Weinstein had to step in and personally told them not to view the film as a straight up slasher film, but as a satire of the genre. They reconsidered and very quickly gave it an R rating.
