Out of the Furnace (2013)

Gritty yet aimless at times. Great dialogue but less impressive story. Top notch acting yet some talent wasted. Just like in Scott Cooper's "Crazy Heart", the soundtrack is awesome but with less affect.
Stehako's rating:

No (2012)
Strange how ineffective the marketing was for this film considering it's about marketing. I really loved how they shot it like it was video from the 1980's, which made the archival footage seamlessly blend with the cinematography.
Stehako's rating:

Kill Your Darlings (2013)

A film about love, death, and dream... but through the eyes of Ginsberg; so it's not your typical story.
Krokidas does an impressive job as a debut director, capturing the era and the troubled minds of the subjects.
Stehako's rating:

The Lone Ranger (2013)
Perhaps my tastes have not refined enough over the years because I actually found this entertaining. It's good fun and right in line with the 'Pirates' movies as far as the overall production; so I'm not really sure why it was ill received by the critics and some movie-goers.
And I now (somewhat) agree with the producers when they blame the critics for the poor box office reception. I mean it's got Tom Wilkinson, for Christ's sake!

Stehako's rating:

Levon Helm, one of my favorite musicians/singers. The heart of the great road band, The Band. Now, living out his rural life until his death. His voice, rougher, his heart, stronger.
Stehako's rating:

Prince Avalanche (2013)

Rudd and Hirsch play together well in this small but heavy movie accompanied by a very cool score. A nice departure from the usual David Gordon Green direction.
Stehako's rating:

Inequality for All (2013)
Much like 'Inside Job' this is an infuriating documentary in the most complimentary of ways. One that lays out how much the US is screwed up and how clearly we can get out of it, but knowing we won't.
Stehako's rating:

Clear History (2013)
David doesn't stray away from his usual schtick; but hey, it's still funny!
Plus he has a great supporting cast that brings in laughs, including Michael Keaton and slightly deranged ammunitions novice.
It's very formulaic and there is very little craft in the filmmaking; but an enjoyable movie in the end.

Stehako's rating:

Lore (2012)

This striking and stark, brutal film is effective enough to keep its imagery in your mind for days. I respect this but it's not the good imagery I want in my head.
Saskia Rosendahl is proving she is one hell of a talent that should be getting some noteworthy roles on the way soon, I'm sure.
Stehako's rating:

The performances and dialogue are superb for an action movie. I'm captivated by Crowe and Costner's every word; but most scenes are too inconceivable to take this movie seriously... and this movie wants to be serious.
Also, it's damn beautiful to look at throughout and Snyder certainly knows how to direct action.

Stehako's rating:

Renoir (2012)

A beautifully-filmed story about the famous painter, his family, art and desires. The acting is subtle but the filmmaking is a little inefficient and repetitive.
Stehako's rating:

20 Feet from Stardom (2013)

A well overdue tribute to the important contributors to rock, soul and Rhythm & Blues. I learned a lot about the subjects and they made it entertaining enough with a well-paced evolution of time.
Stehako's rating:

Behind the Candelabra (2013)
The cinematography and production design are the highlights of this Soderbergh film. Of course, the believable performances make it worth gazing at all the pomp and fur.
It's nice to see Michael Douglas actually making an effort again.
It's nice to see Michael Douglas actually making an effort again.
Stehako's rating:

Fast & Furious 6 (2013)

This franchise is still surprising me. While not as gloriously raucous as "Fast Five" it still does its best to up the ante and is loaded with fun one-liners and stunts.
Stehako's rating:

Sound City (2013)
Dave Grohl puts together a sentimental music doc about a lost art form, another example of technology ruining technique. Unfortunately too much time is spent on Rick Springfield.
Stehako's rating:

The Iceman (2012)

One of Michael Shannon's best. In fact, the entire cast nails it which makes the ending surprisingly heartbreaking
Stehako's rating:

Director: Jim Jarmusch
His 12th Movie
My 6th movie watched from the director
Perfect score for this movie, likely memorable enigmatic characters that hit the right tone throughout. The production design is noteworthy, too. I love the very specific type of characters and vampires they are. Jarmusch shows he still has some creativity left but the overuse of exposition is its biggest setback.

Stehako's rating:

A sort of road trip movie that elicits plenty of laughs mixed in with some sophomoric low-brow humor. The overall cast is great and Jennifer Aniston proves, once again, you can still look good in your 40's
Stehako's rating:

Despicable Me 2 (2013)

The minions are no doubt funny but the movie leaves more to be desired, losing the heart of the first one.
Stehako's rating:

A funny duo make this paint-by-numbers action buddy comedy worth watching
Stehako's rating:

Stehako's rating:

The Internship (2013)

Despite it being a disgustingly outrageous advertisement for Google this movie is really funny with reliable leads and comedic supporting roles.
Stehako's rating:

The Counselor (2013)

A brutal dialogue-heavy crime film that has some potentially iconic scenes. I'm surprised by how poorly this was received. If you like Cormac McCarthy you will really like this.
Stehako's rating:

Thor: The Dark World (2013)
I liked it a little more than the first - Better writing, acting and story is just as interesting and place nicely into the Marvel universe.
Stehako's rating:

Mud (2013)
Another example of McCoughnehey's proficient rebound. The most tolerable Jeff Nichols film yet.
Stehako's rating:

A good example of where the loss of constraint equals the loss of creativity. While I quite enjoyed it I was never in awe as I was with Blomkamp's "District 9"
Stehako's rating:

Spring Breakers (2012)

A kinetic and daring bout with an entertaining cast leaves you wondering what the hell you just watched... but I like it.
Stehako's rating:

Blue Jasmine (2013)

Nothing special... oh wait, Cate Blanchett is very special... otherwise just an average Woody Allen film.
Stehako's rating:

Hopefully, as with the first one, it becomes better with multiple viewings. Still really funny, but just not quite as clever as the first.
Stehako's rating:

A great documentary for anyone, like me, who never truly understood what was going on with WikiLeaks and everyone involved. This is a fully developed, yet still ongoing, story.
Assange is an interesting character and the direction of this documentary is very good in allowing the viewer to take sides and believe in someone, then easily change their mind the next frame, then possibly back again.
Fun stuff!

Side Effects (2013)

This is a great example of frustration done right. Mara pulls off what is perhaps her best performance and Soderbergh continues to make me wish he wasn't retiring from film.
Stehako's rating:

A simple, funny summer coming-of-age comedy that doesn't really bring anything new to the table.
Stehako's rating:

The Bling Ring (2013)

Sofia Coppola directs this stylish unique film about recent events and accompanied by a killer soundtrack that carries the movie.
Stehako's rating:

Pacific Rim (2013)

Del Toro finally directs a film.... It was decent. Charlie Day and Ron Perlman are the most memorable in this
Stehako's rating:

The Conjuring (2013)
Elicits some frightening moments and boasts genre-bending performances and cinematography.
Stehako's rating:

Computer Chess (2013)

A very strange yet possibly brilliant retro mockumentary. Perhaps the ballsiest film made this year, seeing that they were making something that has virtually no box office potential.
Stehako's rating:

This Is the End (2013)

A great first half hour turns into a somewhat tedious self-absorbed movie about the apocalypse, but Channing Tatum's cameo makes it worth watching to the end.
Stehako's rating:

Disconnect (2012)

A powerful series of stories that represent our connection with a system that isn't exactly out for our best interest, as the human race. There are four stories that 'connect', which is nice, since it keeps them strong and you don't have to remember what was going on in the story because it had been so long, like in 'Crash' for example.
The ending is great, as it makes us viewers think one thing and then gives us something better, without overdramatizing it and turning it into a melodrama.
Batemen gives one of his best performances and Paula Patton proves her strength isn't just in her undeniable beauty.
Stehako's rating:

The Invisible Woman (2014)

Fiennes' sophomore effort proves he has a strong eye and ear for adaptations with beautiful language. Speaking of beautiful, Felicity Jones, who is supposed to look a little more homely in this role, still shows her magnetism and forte for the fine acting required in such a role.
