As Above, So Below (2014)

the moment i saw the trailler i was actually very intrigued to be honest, too bad it was that same thing that ruined the movie for me, deep down (no pun intended) i had a feeling that what i saw in the trailler was the whole movie but i still had hope that there was something more to it, i was wrong, if you really want to watch it dont watch the trailler, it has good atmosphere, it doesn´t use the jumpscare trope a lot wich is good, and it has decent acting, but the story ends up being too generic and bland for my taste as it did not surprise me beyond what it shows on the trailler.

Her (2013)

I think anybody who falls in love is a freak. It's a crazy thing to do. It's kind of like a form of socially acceptable insanity.

In a genre that is filled with many dark and gritty/post apocalyptic/and action movies, this one just feels like a such a nice breath of fresh air, a very interesting take on the subject of AI and what can be percieved as love and conciousness and sci-fi in general, very well acted (specially by Joaquin Phoenix) with a believable and very well created world, and all and all a very cool movie indeed, but to be honest other than the cool concept/world, and beautiful cinematography the movies does not have a whole lot going on in terms of story.

Stalker

The Zone wants to be respected. Otherwise it will punish.

Usually runtime is not a problem for me but when a movie doesn´t have a lot going for it in terms of content it becomes a problem, and that is exactly what happens with this movie, along with the excessive runtime, i feel like the movie tries too hard with its ideology and philosophy but in the end falls on its face doing so, because of this instead of real characters we are given representations of ideologys wich creates a boundarie between them and the actual storys world, wich is very intriguing and well constructed but unfortunaly not "explored" not nearly enough because of these reasons (Some of the performances are preety good though).

Score: Just Plain Bad.

Need for Speed (2014)

Technicaly i was not ready to hate on this movie but i definitely didin´t have very high hopes for it, and im glad to say i was wrong, while the story is not necessarily bad but a bit overseen at this age, its still preety easy to look past that and see the real potential that the movie really has, not only the performances and characters were solid, but i was also very impressed with the very good directing of the car race and car chase scenes making them more intense as they were not too over the top at all, so don´t expect another fast and furious.

Score: Pretty Good!

District 9

After watching Chappie at the cinema i decided to rewatch what i consider to be Blomkamp´s masterpiece, everything that i think represents him as a director is represented here in the best way possible to the point where i think its gonna be hard for him to accomplish something at the same level (even though i think Chappie was really close) everything shows a perfect balance, from the charachters, the drama,the action and even the story and the world built around it is just fascinating, its also the movie where his social commentary stronger.

Score: Superb/Masterpiece!

Transcendence

once again cool concept and cast, but very poor execution, the movie is just boring all together, and its not even a question of pace but story and characters are just not all that interesting and at times it seems we are supposed to root for the wrong people, at least if i got the ending right the guy was actually trying to help all along and we are led to believe by all the other characters that he has "evil" intentions, and all of this is sad mostly because the movies subject matter actually has potential.

Score: Meh...

The Skeleton Twins (2014)

Usually im have a special interest whenever actors that we are preety much used to see related to pure comedy (and good one at that) take on more dramatic and serious roles, and normally most actually do succeed, Hader and Wiig are not exceptions here, delivering very good and believable performances, and that is all that is needed, solid performances, since the movie and its story is about this two siblings and their respective evolution.

Score: Preety Good!

The Garden of sinners Movie 1: Overlooking View... (2007)

As a standalone, the movie fails as it leaves a lot of unanswered questions and the characters are left preety much one dimensional and not explored enough, but, knowing that this is just a first of a series it actually intrigued me to know more about this world and in the characters themselves, it also presents a nice animation and storyline, so in the end as a standalone movie like i said it fails but as a series it succeeds at intriguing me.

Score: Good.

Video Games: The Movie

i feel like you can only enjoy this documentary to its fullest if you dont know anything or almost anything of the industry and are actually interested in the subject, because for me as a gamer myself the movie didn´t really show nothing that i already didin´t know and on top of it didin´t talk about some trhat are in my opinion more relevant subjects but i guess that its understandable since its impossible to put the whole industry story in a two hour movie, but overall its very well constructed and explained and its not biased in any way representing the community as it really is.

Hercules (2014)

I really don´t understand why can´t hollywood do a proper hercules movie when the source material is so rich in content (even though the way they tell hercules story in this one is somewhat "interesting"), while this one is a great improvement over the garbage that was "The legend of Hercules", it still does not satisfy completely either, and literally the major reason i think this movie gets the score that it gets from me, is the general casting that in my opinion makes it more "interesting" than it really is.

The Homesman (2014)

one of the conclusions that i get after watching this film is that Tommy Lee Jones as a director is for sure approved, the whole movie has a nice gritty tone througout its whole interitty and its perfectly balanced by the great and believable performances, and definitely managed to surprise me with its movie changing twist at the middle of it (wich not a lot of people liked but actually made me like the movie even more), makes me miss the presence of more westerns in hollywood.

Score: Preety good!

Os Gatos Não Têm Vertigens (2014)

Normally i am not a huge fan of portuguese cinema as i think most directors just take this in advantage to put a bunch of famous actors saying as much sware words possible per second something they usually can´t do on TV, usually kinda destroying their dialogue and being very distracting, but then you have the other side wich has hidden gems like this movie that make me still respect the potential that it has, where they actually succeed at delivering a very interesting, and emotional story, the acting here is also preety great taking advantage from already very experienced actors, but the newcomers don´t stay a lot behind either, overall i liked it a lot and i definitley recommend it!

Paddington (2014)

I honestly don´t think the movie could have been handled in a better way, its funny and fun for all ages and it doesn´t take itself too seriously and has a cartoony vibe to it like it should, and like i said if it was made any differently it probably wouldn´t have worked as good as it did, the story is a bit cliched, and it feels like the confrontation part of it was a bit unnecessary, i think a movie just about the hardships of a bear trying to fit in London would be enough, but it still works and that´s what matters.

Chappie (2015)

Neill Blomkamp is easily becoming one of my favorite directors, and this movie is one example of why, approaching a subject/theme that is very recent (singularity), proving that Blomkamp is always with his eye opened for this kind of stuff, its almost the perfect balance between drama, action and social commentary with a nice story and theme along te way, the only problem i have with it is that when it comes to the human characters their development is somewhat lacking in some aspects but its not too bothering, and am i the only one who thinks that artificial intelligence should eventually take over.

Score: Awesometacular!
