The movie Baz Luhrmann was born to make, his reinterpretation of the star-crossed lovers is outlandish and fabulously spectacular. Young love, rebellion, beautiful stars and verse preambled violence make this classic anew.

The World of Apu (1959)

Brought together by strange circumstances but finding happiness that can even overcome the misery of poverty. One of the most potent love stories I have seen.
PulpRoman's rating:

Slow West (2015)

Sometimes love is one-side, stupid and you find your heart in the wrong place but it's the spirit of love that makes it so beautiful. To love one who does not love you unconditionally, to the denial and detriment of one's self.
PulpRoman's rating:

Summer with Monika (1953)

Rebellious youth starved for adventure and each-other.
This celluloid dream captures the essence of young and summer love, so fleeting and yet so consequential. If you never experienced, you can always imagine and live vicariously through this movie.
PulpRoman's rating:

My Love (2006)

A poetic realism intertwined with class difference and religious attitudes. My Love probes human desire, unrequited love and the assumptions we make about another when we are enamored with the beautiful idea of them.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

Love that exists despite curses and outward appearance. Howl's Moving Castle evokes a childlike desire for romance, danger and adventure in it's audience. Heavy stuff baby. When Sofie says "It's wonderful Hal," I could just die.
PulpRoman's rating:

Full of poetry and color, she searches for her wolf man on the wind. A love story so unique. The passion for another so strong but hunted from a distance kept at bay by the gun of a father who does not want to lose his daughter.
PulpRoman's rating:

Buffalo '66 (1998)

Who knew you could just kidnap your way into a loving relationship? Oh, the things you learn from film.

The Fifth Element (1997)

The adult version of the above,oh Besson you hopeless romantic. Leeloo is adorable and mega fierce while hard man Korben Dallas shows his more sensitive side when it comes to this girl who is more than meets the eye.
PulpRoman's rating:

Love in a war zone. Further complicated by lies and cultural traditions (regarding courting and marriage) that make their union more difficult than scaling a wall dividing Israel and Palestine.
PulpRoman's rating:

Breezy (1974)

A case of opposite personalities attracting, with an older male and younger female. One being a hippy and the other a stiff businessman. We see how society frowns upon their union and how they might succumb to the pressures to break it off. I also love the beautiful and free spirited Breezy, great character.
PulpRoman's rating:

Benny & Joon (1993)

The pair couldn't be any cuter but the barriers to their love make it a compelling romance. A mixture of witticism and lurking mental health problems craft this eccentric love story.
PulpRoman's rating:

Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

It's always nice seeing the weird guy finding that one who is understanding and might be just as quirky as him. Getting out of your own way and disregarding other people's opinions resonates in this love tale.
PulpRoman's rating:

The Panic in Needle Park (1971)

Love in deep-shit, can it survive? Love that is destroying them both. Do they love the drugs more then each-other?...Young Al is also one of my favourite things.
PulpRoman's rating:

Fences (2016)

Love that has been through so so many trails. August says it best...
Don't you think I ever wanted other things? Don't you think I had dreams and hopes? What about my life? What about me. Don't you think it ever crossed my mind to want to know other men? That I wanted to lay up somewhere and forget about my responsibilities? That I wanted someone to make me laugh so I could feel good? You not the only one who's got wants and needs. But I held on to you, Troy. I took all my feelings, my wants and needs, my dreams...and I buried them inside you. I planted myself inside you and waited to bloom. And it didn't take me no eighteen years to find out the soil was hard and rocky and it wasn't never gonna bloom.
PulpRoman's rating:

A romance at summer camp between the self sufficient orphan and the brilliant girl in a dysfunctional family. The ones who want to separate them? Those nasty adults with their emotionally blunted experiences of growing up. Carved in the idiosyncratic world of Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom attempts to preserve first love's youthful naivety against the opposition of grown up society and their conventions just as Scout Master Ward still dresses in his full uniform.
PulpRoman's rating:

Chungking Express (1994)

Love in the modern world. Can we keep pace with each-other, ourselves? Splashed with neon lights, sixties music, great dialogue and acting that displays the angst of living, loving and not being able to communicate with another. All against the brackish current of time, work, coincidence, the past, aspirations, being human and the realities that contradict your dreams or ideals...
PulpRoman's rating:

Loving someone you cannot touch and having them even for a moment means they will die. Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light intertwines aging and immorality, fragility and endurance, and love between beings not even within the same realm of reality.
PulpRoman's rating:

Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (2005)

Ninja lovers from opposite clans, a Romeo and Juliet type of tale but they can and are sworn to kill each-other.

Teenage Splendour
Romances I liked when I was younger. I'm sure there are a lot more cheesy romances from this time that I can't remember, especially on Disney.
