Whilst alien life is a relatively common aspect across science fiction, Extraterrestrial Sci-Fi instead focuses on it as a primary. Investigating the social and philosophical consequences of alien life on humanity.

There are "Alien Invasion" settings where humanity is invaded and often genocided by an often technologically superior alien force (this one can bleed into Apocalyptic settings). There are "Alien Investigator" settings too where a Ufologist, or a team of Ufologist-types investigate potential alien activity, or are somehow connected up into a conspiracy where Alien life is concealed from the public. There is also the lesser "Xenofiction" setting, where the narrative takes place from an alien perspective.
