ETA: Movie recommendations should be finalized by January 7th.

Five by Five

A group of six members. Each member chooses five film recommendations for each of member of the group. You can only recommend a film that you have watched. Each member should end up with five film recommendations from five different people and a total of twenty five films to watch over the course of the year.

Each member is responsible for finding the movie titles recommend to them through some type of movie service (rental, or streaming films online).

If a film title can't be found a substitute can be requested.

Five by Five for 2013
The Giraffe

The group idea was inspired by Tapio's New Year's Resolutions list. It seemed like a good way to keep the spirit of our Movie Exchange Program alive while expanding the number of members in the group. Thanks to all the work from the other members of the group and to the members of Listal who are always inspiring. I'm just the spastic guy who has a fetish for formatting lists. ~ Toast

A method to my madness perhaps. My first pick, I'm trying to find 'low-key thrillers'. My second pick I'm trying to limit myself to choosing only one non-English speaking film. Also, vaguely keeping my eye out for something more upbeat. I seem to have done a 'dark and depressing' run of films in 2012 and will spare you my discoveries.

I'll just change the date to the 7th. I was really just picking an arbitrary date as I'm still not sure about my picks. So, I didn't want anyone to get too excited about a film listed. I'm giving myself the option to change my mind but a deadline so that I won't procrastinate ;)

Yay, so all six members are editors of the list. I have made a note of all the members on the right side of the list. I'll order it by who edits first.

The ETA is just a suggestion.

The List is now public. So, everyone can stay up to date. I think that is all for now. I'll be hibernating under the mistletoe with hot chocolate and season two of The Wire. Cheers ;)

Oh, since all the movies are all on one list. This represents a few twists. You can't recommend a film that anyone else has recommend to *anyone* on the list. I think that is sort of cool... then again... be careful that you aren't hijacking a film that someone else has chosen for another user.
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Dec 24 6:10
Ah, but theoretically if someone wanted to recommend the same film to, say, TWO people they could do so & just list it in the notes section for the 2nd person. Right?

Just asking. :)

There you go being smart again.
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Dec 24 11:40
This is looking great!

Okay, so I've got my rough draft all drawn up and... Gah!
Phillydude already recommended Diabolique to Mackenzi! And Gah!! lotr23 already recommended Say Anything for Phillydude!!

Haha, great minds and all that. Okay, gotta put the 'ol thinking cap back on. Be back soon...

Hey cool! I just learned how to do

I'll be using it with obnoxious frequency for the next 3 or 4 months.

Okay, so didn't get to give this quite as much thought as I'd maybe like. But... holidays, then girlfriend's Dad coming to town and staying with us. And then Jan 1st- 8th one of the managers going out of town and me to pick up the slack at work. Oh wait, I'm doing this already anyway, so that will make 3 straight 6-day weeks at work, starting Christmas Tuesday. Oh joy!

So yes, figure I better just get it posted now, and then if I find time tinker with it later perhaps. Off to bed.

Happy Holidays Everyone!!

My picks are in. Tried to give everyone a mix of genres while including at least one foreign film. If anyone has problems finding a film I've recommended, you might check with me & see if I have a copy to lend (because most of my recs I own).

I don't THINK I stole any films from anyone else, but if I did let me know & I'll pick something else.

OK, I think I have fussed with my choices long enough. So, my choices are set for better or worse. As Phillydude said, if there is anything that you have already seen or can't get a hold of, let me know.
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Dec 31 6:03
@jaytoast - Just thought you should know Xanadon't had recommended Touch of Evil for me to watch. Guess one of you needs to make another choice. I'll let y'all duke it out. ;)
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Dec 31 6:19
@giraffe I thought I stole lotr23's films. Ha, but one of mine got snagged so, no big deal. Now you have two dark comedies. The Company of Men is a bit darker then To Die For.
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Dec 31 11:31
Okay, couple of minor changes--
jaytoast: replaced My Life Without Me with Damsels in Distress. Why I apparently wanted to turn you into a suicide case for a moment there, I have no idea. I'm sorry. It's been fixed.
Phillydude: Figure you'll get to Anatomy of a Murder soon enough on your own. AND since I wanted to toss a foreign language film into the mix, you get Beauty and the Beast instead, old-school French style. (and actually I've now observed that you've never seen the Disney version either. Shame. Maybe you can make a dbl feature out of it :)
lotr23: My rough draft included Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon all along. This official list now reflects that.

Might tinker with my recs for the giraffe and Mackenzi before it's all said and done, but perhaps not. Wanted to work a foreign language flick in for Mackenzi, but I think in this case I'm sticking with the documentary Marwencol instead. Looks as though I'm making up for it with two foreign language films for the giraffe :)

If anyone has problems finding a film I've recommended, you might check with me & see if I have a copy to lend (because most of my recs I own).

I also wanted to mention that I too own a number of the movies that appear on this list (18 if I counted correctly), and as many or more of them are actually films that someone else recommended, actually. So yes... if anyone is having trouble, I'm also more than willing to drop a movie in the mail if I happen to own it and it's helpful to anyone.

Oh, and it's worth reiterating here:

Private messages are the way to go if anyone needs to swap such information.

@Xanadon't You bilge-sucking rumslinger! You scuttled my pick!

OK, I changed my choices without hijacking someone elses movie. Ha! Think next time we will need to each create our own list.

Off to stock up on loot for the last night of the year. Cheers :)

But, but...I'd recommended Crouching Tiger to phillydude. :( Eh, I'll just write it in. :P

@jaytoast- I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to sink your battleship!

@the giraffe- Ah! I see what happened. If you want, you can totally steal it back while I'm not looking. I'd be happy to brainstorm up something else for lotr.

Ha yes, a few growing pains to work out, it would seem.

Sorry for anything that might be my fault. I have no idea at this point what that includes, what I've been blamed for, and in which cases every one has just been too tactful (and perhaps filled with a sort of weary/bemused pity at my general incompetence and inability to "play well with others") to bother to mention anything.

I was very tired (intoxicated) when I first sat down to this, so it could be that my extreme exhaustion (drunkenness) prevented me from noticing cases of the same movie being recommended twice (four times- I was seeing everything in double anyway). In the future I'll try not to participate in projects while I'm in such a sleepy and worn out (fantastically shit-hammered) state.

@Xanadon't - No need to apologize. I promise my above comments aimed at you were done with a sense of humor. Up to you as far as Crouching Tiger goes whether you want to replace it with another choice or not. I'm fine with leaving it written in for phillydude. :)
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Jan 1 18:51
@Xanadon't Ha, no worries. I have a rough list of films for people but I wasn't as competent as the giraffe to actually remember a few of my picks. Well, who I gave what movie to seemed to be more of an issue for my feeble brain.
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Jan 3 2:14
Okay I'm done with my picks, just gonna stop fiddling with them- they're as good as they'll ever be. I can't wait to start this, I've already got several of these on DVD.
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Jan 6 1:27
Okay, I totally just realized tonight that I'm the only person who hasn't commented here yet, so just dropping by to let you know I think I'm done with my picks and hope everyone enjoys my recommendations. :) Let me know if you have a hard time finding any of the movies or if there are any that you've already seen.
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Jan 6 16:35
Huh, totally cool to see other people doing this stuff as well :)
Posted: 5 years, 9 months ago at Jan 7 15:43
Nice going. Good films too. :)
Posted: 5 years, 4 months ago at May 23 2:49
I've seen so many good movies this year. 5 months in and I am wishing I could change some of these! :P
Posted: 5 years, 4 months ago at May 23 3:41
^ I like the films you picked. Many of them are films that I would have chosen myself. I'm sort of behind on my diary but I like the film choices... also I'm sort of watching every film listed that I haven't seen even if it was recommend to someone else. Ah, my trips to the video store usually result in the worst film choices. I think I might pick films better for other people then I would for myself... or I hope so because some of my recent personal picks have been god-awful.
Posted: 5 years, 4 months ago at May 23 5:04
@Mackenzi - There's always next year. ;)
Posted: 5 years, 4 months ago at May 23 16:02
For me I felt that last year there was a bit of a learning curve. We had recommended films to each other before but it wasn't until a formal group that our different tastes started to show. I would be curious to see what the 5x5 most recommended films looks like. What films most of us have seen and rate above a seven. Off the top of my head I think "Sunset Boulevard", "The Vanishing" (1988) and "Mary and Max" would all easily make the cut.

The 'mega list of movies to watch before you die' are great but what films are actually being watched and not placed on a list because of its importance to a particular era or directer? OK... well I think my half cup of coffee is kicking in and that means it is time to work ;)
Posted: 4 years, 11 months ago at Oct 25 20:32
I did actually manage to track down all the films. I more had an issue of trying to catch up with Bergman and Woody Allen films.
Posted: 4 years, 9 months ago at Dec 29 21:32
Hi everyone, I wasn't sure where else to put this since I wanted to send a message everyone could read. Sorry for falling off the earth for a couple months, I was really bombarded with personal and family stuff during the holidays. I've only got one movie left to watch (Mary and Max rec'd by the giraffe), I just need to find the time to sit down and make a list of them all and add comments and ratings and such. I want to at least start that tonight. Hope y'all are doing well, will be back online later.
Posted: 4 years, 9 months ago at Dec 30 4:53
Not a problem. I have been the worst about updating what I have watched. Over-all 2013 wasn't a very good movie or being on-line year for me. I sort of dropped the ball on more then just being on Listal. I may need to be more practical about things in 2014.
Posted: 4 years, 9 months ago at Dec 30 5:53
@Mackenzi - As jaytoast said, no worries. I'll be mostly disappearing for the next couple months myself, as I've got several things that require my attention sans distractions. Looking forward to your thoughts on your films, especially Mary & Max!
