OUT OF THE PAST

This was the movie that first made me aware of "film noir" although in those days they were just known as thrillers and nothing more than that. Over the years these black and white movies have gathered a cult following. "Out of the Past" stars Robert Mitchum and the gorgeous Jane Greer. It is a sordid tale about former private detective Jeff Markham (Robert Mitchum) trying to escape his unsavoury ... read more

A classic

Since this movie had a really stellar reputation, I was really eager to check it out. Well, it is probably the most essential film noir ever made. Indeed, you basically had all the usual trademarks : the raincoats, the hats, the omnipresent cigarettes, the gansters, the detective, the femmes fatale and the double-crossing intrigues. Considering the directing, I saw as well a couple of other movies... read more

Jeff Bailey, small-town gas pumper, has his mysterious past catch up with him one day when he's ordered to meet with gambler Whit Sterling. En route to the meeting, he tells girlfriend Ann his story. Flashback: Once, Jeff was a private eye hired by Sterling to find his mistress Kathie who shot Whit and absconded with $40,000. He traces her to Acapulco...where the delectable Kathie makes Jeff forget all about Sterling... Back in the present, Whit's new job for Jeff is clearly a trap, but Jeff's precautions only leave him more tightly enmeshed.

"“Out of the Past is my favorite of all the film noir movies…. Jane Greer was about as good a film noir dame as you could get. She’s beautiful and totally untrustworthy. You would never be safe with her at any time whatsoever.” -Robert Osborne “I’m always taken with films which seem very accurate and smart about the geography of the sets and where you are at any given time. Out of the Past is one of the most artfully staged movies I’ve ever seen…. Mitchum at his most voluptuous"

"Jeff Bailey seems to be a mundane gas station owner in remote Bridgeport, CA. He is dating local girl Ann Miller and lives a quiet life. But Jeff has a secret past, and when a mysterious stranger arrives in town, Jeff is forced to return to the dark world he had tried to escape. I know this movie has been touted as a classic but I found it so very dull and dated that I switched it off after an hour. The plot is lame. The photography is passable and the direction far more competent than this wou"

" Notes: It is probably the most essential film noir ever made. Indeed, you basically had all the usual trademarks : the raincoats, the hats, the omnipresent cigarettes, the gansters, the detective, the femmes fatale and the double-crossing intrigues. Considering the directing, I saw as well a couple of other movies directed by Jacques Tourneur (‘Cat People’, ‘I Walked with a Zombie’) but, even though these movies were decent, this feature was definitely much more impressive. Slant’s 100 Best Film Noirs of All Time (100 movies items)

"It makes sense that one of the darkest and truly existentialist noir films was directed by Jacques Tourneur, a director otherwise known best for brooding horror films like Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie, and who, a native of France, shared a homeland with existentialism. As played by Robert Mitchum, protagonist Jeff Bailey projects a coolness that shades into a passive acceptance of fate. When an unexpected and obviously threatening figure from his secret past appears in the small Nevada "

" FilmStruck- 1hr. 37min. First Viewing Preface: I was very tired when I saw this film, so I'll forego any genuine critiques (because every movie deserves a fair shot and/or active audience), and stick with some general stuff. From what I remember, it was a fun and frothy noir with an ace cast and top-notch screenplay.
