"There's a cure for everything except death."

I know I'm in the severe minority here, but The Bicycle Thief is a film I found to be just tolerable as opposed to great. The film is a poignant character study that was an intrepid move at the time of its release. Critics have hailed it as being an all-time classic and the film even won a special Oscar at the Academy Awards of 1949. read more

Antonio Ricci is an unemployed man in the depressed post-World War II economy of Italy. With a wife and two children to support, he is desperate for work. He is delighted to at last get a good job pasting up posters, but he must have a bicycle. He is told unequivocally, "No bicycle, no job." His wife Maria pawns their bedsheets in order to get money to redeem his bicycle from the pawnbroker.

Nonprofessional actors are not used to hitting marks or doing the kind of things that a pro actor would learn to do. “De Sica's neo-realism paints post-war Rome with lively, raw strokes, fishing among ordinary people rather than professional actors, yet without losing an ounce of class. "My aim is to trace the dramatic in everyday situations, the marvelous in the small chronicle, indeed, in the very small chronicle," said the director of Sora. And this beautiful portrait of the Roman populace, made of robberies and restaurants, masses of the poor and pawnshops, is about the smallest chronicle. And as sadly often happens, even a small matter of chronicle may ruin a whole life.

" Date: 9/11/2019 Viewed: In class Re-Watch Note: I haven't seen this movie since I was 16 back when I was in High School and I still love this movie. The characters are very well written and the acting is fantastic in my opinion. The movie's pacing is perfect because it didn't go on forever or didn't go by too quickly. It told a great story from start to finish in 93 minutes. Not much else that I can say about this movie because everyone else has talked about this classic movie to death alre"
