"First viewing - July 22nd Since I've liked the other films I've seen from Dee Rees I wanted to make sure to check this one out too. And it's so so good. The cast is excellent all around, and it's an honest and heartbreaking look at one girl's struggles with her identity. When a film gets me talking to the characters, you know it's working really well. There's some great music spread throughout too. So yeah, I deeply appreciated the film and would gladly sit through it again."
“The piercing realism that can’t be faked strikes you hardest in Pariah. You can sense it in the script and direction by Dee Rees, you can sense it in Adepero Oduye’s central performance, in Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell’s supporting work. It just drips from every frame of Pariah. You could write it off as Rees’ truth coming out in the mouths and actions of her characters, and that’s certainly a part of it, but it’s also in the naked, candid performances that never feel like they’re acting.
