Film Journal 2019 (160 movies items)

"This adaptation of Hemingway's fine book certainly looks the part tenfold – though Petrov's style doesn't quite mesh with small movements that all just look like someone applied Photoshop's default motion blur -filter – but is a complete letdown in terms of, well, being an adaptation. Aside from some very promising stylistic flourishes at the start and end, as we're presented the dreams of the titular old man, it is a nose-to-the-grindstone approach as we just see the story of the book play "

1001 Animated Shorts You Must See - The Full List (1001 movies items)

"DIR: Alexsandr Petrov SUMMARY: An adaptation of Ernest Hemmingway's story of a man's epic battle to catch a large marlin. WHY IT'S HERE: Russian animator Alexsandr Petrov is surely one of the greatest artists working in animation and yet his earlier shorts are films I always struggled to connect with more than on a visual basis. With his Ernest Hemmingway adaptation 'The Old Man and the Sea' however, Petrov combined his astonishing animated paintings with perhaps the perfect source material "
