Lu Over the Wall

A confusing, charming mess of a takeoff on The Little Mermaid, Lu Over the Wall is several different films vying for attention, all of them various degrees of good. If you could, just for a minute, imagine what would happen if a Miyazaki film was rammed through a Looney Tunes filter, and I’m talking about a Bob Clampett/Tex Avery brand of free associative lunacy here, with a dash of rock and rol... read more

Description: Kai, a young middle schooler, lives in Hinashi Town, a lonely fishing village, with his father and his grandfather, a sun-umbrella maker. He used to live in Tokyo, but after his parents divorced he moved back to his parent's home town. Kai has trouble telling his parents the complicated feelings he has for them, and he's lonely and pessimistic about his school life. One of his joys is uploading songs he writes to the internet. One day, his classmates Kunio and Yuuho invite him to join their band, "SEIRÈN." As he reluctantly follows them to Merfolk Island, their practice spot, they meet Lu, the mermaid girl. Lu sing ... Movies I Watched in March 2020 (30 movies items)

" Date: 3/18/2020 Viewed: Netflix First viewing Note: I have looked forward to watching this movie for a while now because I'm a huge Masaaki Yuasa fan. I finally got the chance to watch it because it's now on Netflix (As of March 18, 2020). I do feel like it's Yuasa's weakest work, but I still enjoy it. The animation is fantastic and Yuasa's artistic direction is wonderful as always. I did like the story and characters in this movie because you care about the characters and I like the genera"

"24.11. Luta on kovin vaikea lähteä kommentoimaan. Yuasan epä-yuasamainen elokuva on törkeän ylipitkä (vaikka kestoa onkin vain se 112 minuuttia), valitettavan typerä ja kerronnallisesti niin epäkiinnostava."

Lu Over the Wall

“A confusing, charming mess of a takeoff on The Little Mermaid, Lu Over the Wall is several different films vying for attention, all of them various degrees of good. If you could, just for a minute, imagine what would happen if a Miyazaki film was rammed through a Looney Tunes filter, and I’m talking about a Bob Clampett/Tex Avery brand of free associative lunacy here, with a dash of rock and roll movie and coming-of-age story as garnishes. Picture this, and you’ll come very close to approximating the chaotic reverie that is Lu Over the Wall.   The problem isn’t that director Masaaki Yuasa is lacking in ideas, but that he’s got too many of them buffeting against each other at any given time. We must absorb the mermaid mythology that the film deploys, and keep various characters s” read more

Movies according to my dreams (94 movies items)

"The English dub of this premiered at the BFI, and the fact that it was dubbed was presented as "bad news", as well as that it had a few edits, but the "good news" was that it was mostly unedited. However, it was heavily edited and reanimated. Lu had a much deeper backstory, the story was relocated to a more industrial town, and new jokes included a video-game-quality-CG slam on The Shape of Water. In fact, the BFI had so much fun with this full house of a showing that they paused it during a fad"
