A good movie

Pedro Almodovar is one of those directors that I have always admired but he never became a personal favorite of mine. Indeed, he is what you can call a real author who has created his own style and, therefore, he always got my respect but, honestly, I always had a hard time with his work and this movie was not an exception. Basically, it is thanks to this movie that Almodovar started to gain some ... read more

Derived from several cinematic sources: the high-flown Hollywood style-over-substance ethos of Douglas Sirk and George Cukor; the psychosexual perversity of Alfred Hitchcock; the grubby transgressions of Warhol, "All About My Mother" is a lush sojourn into the banalities, crises and exoticism of a group of interconnecting Madrid women, the gender and identity of which the film ostensibly celebrate... read more

Description: A single mother in Madrid sees her only son die on his 17th birthday as he runs to seek an actress's autograph. She goes to Barcelona to find the lad's genitor, a woman of transsexual background named Lola who does not know she has a child. First she finds her friend, Agrado, also a trans-woman; through her she meets Rosa, a young nun bound for El Salvador, and by happenstance, becomes the personal assistant of Huma Rojo, the actress her son admired. She helps Huma manage Nina, the co-star and Huma's lover, and she becomes Rosa's caretaker during a dicey pregnancy. With echoes of Lorca, "All About Eve," and "Stree ... (more)

“Derived from several cinematic sources: the high-flown Hollywood style-over-substance ethos of Douglas Sirk and George Cukor; the psychosexual perversity of Alfred Hitchcock; the grubby transgressions of Warhol, "All About My Mother" is a lush sojourn into the banalities, crises and exoticism of a group of interconnecting Madrid women, the gender and identity of which the film ostensibly celebrates. Resplendent in its indelible, kaleidoscopic colour palette, the captivating theatrical pace, naturalistic yet demonstrative performances, hyper-realistic, sumptuous chronicle of transformation, deviation and altered states, from gender to family are propelled by authentic dialogue exchanges, visual exuberance and breezy situational, farcical comedy that can succeed tragedy. All of these themes ” read more

ALL-TIME 100 Revisited (20 movies items)

"The Spanish word for life ought to be Almodóvar. Since bursting onto the international film scene in 1980, this irrepressible showman has served up tangy, nourishing stews of bent men and brave women, of comedy and melodrama, passion and grief. His 1988 Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown made him a sensation in the States, but All About My Mother was the true breakthrough, touching a depth his early films only danced around. Its heroine is Manuela (Cecilia Roth), a Madrid nurse who work"
