Give a Girl a Break

A pleasing if forgettable minor musical that provides Bob Fosse with one of his few major roles, Give a Girl a Break is just one of many MGM musicals released during the 50s that is more of a trial run for up-and-coming talent than anything else. After all, there’s a precocious Debbie Reynolds fresh off Singin’ in the Rain and Gower and Marge Champion trying out for the Fred and Ginger formula... read more

(OK) Small but nice, well staged (best number is the Champions in the roof, simple, hard; them Bob Fosse with Debbie agiants New York night skiline; the baloon dance is too crowded in the screen with all the cottonlike snow ); it has a softened power of that 'you can be a star' in this melting pot of NY....

When a temperamental star walks out of a big Broadway show, it’s time to GIVE A GIRL A BREAK. But which of the hopefuls will land the lead? Suzy (Debbie Reynolds) brings pizzazz. Joanna (Helen Wood) offers swellegant sophistication. And lovely Madelyn (Marge Champion) is the director’s former dance partner and former love. This breezy backstager is memorable for its Burton Lane/Ira Gershwin score and for the once-in-a-lifetime collaboration of three legendary artists: Stanley Donen directs, while Gower Champion and Bob Fosse bring dazzling grace and physicality to the other side of the lens.

Give a Girl a Break

“A pleasing if forgettable minor musical that provides Bob Fosse with one of his few major roles, Give a Girl a Break is just one of many MGM musicals released during the 50s that is more of a trial run for up-and-coming talent than anything else. After all, there’s a precocious Debbie Reynolds fresh off Singin’ in the Rain and Gower and Marge Champion trying out for the Fred and Ginger formula. Although that last bit is also part of the problem.   Gower and Marge Champion are exquisite dancers, best used in specialty numbers or in supporting roles, but limited as actors. He’s very handsome but can’t seem to sparkle like Gene Kelly in front of the camera. Give a Girl a Break does provide Champion and Fosse with the opportunity to dance together, and that’s really something. Now” read more
