“Girl with a Pearl Earring seemed like a very interesting film, a great cast, a strong film composer such as Alexandre Desplat and of course a film that uses paintings. Maybe because of the sometimes meditative pacing or the subject matter Girl with a Pearl Earring won't appeal to all. However it did to me, what I saw was a very well made, beautifully scored and directed and well acted film. I am all for visually stunning movies. Stunning isn't enough for me, the whole film right down to the cinematography to the evocative costumes, sets and scenery looks exquisite. And need I mention the wonderful paintings? Add to that strong direction, Desplat's most haunting and most beautifully-used score, a script that doesn't feel at all stilted and a moving story and you have a great film. But I can” read more
" HBO Now- 1hr. 40min. First Viewing Girl with a Pearl Earring explores some interesting themes and issues in era rich with them (class, gender, art, etc.), but can't quite muster up enough energy to give them the emotion and weight that they deserve. The underlying desire and uncertainty at the center of the story stays, mostly, beneath the surface, and while that does wonders for the characters and actors, it leaves the story, at times, lifeless. The acting and craft are what propel this movie "
"A wonderful and subtle movie, with great attention to detail. Sets are magnificent, particularly Vermeer's house and the canal at night. Atmosphere was beautifully captured, showing just why life could be so oppressive for a live-in servant, even if she was generally well-treated. This movie provides real insight into 17th century Holland. Scarlett Johansson is excellent as Griet with Colin Firth also excelling as the Dutch master painter Johannes Vermeer. All that's left to say is this movie is"
