Girl with a Pearl Earring review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 29 March 2022 09:00

Girl with a Pearl Earring seemed like a very interesting film, a great cast, a strong film composer such as Alexandre Desplat and of course a film that uses paintings. Maybe because of the sometimes meditative pacing or the subject matter Girl with a Pearl Earring won't appeal to all. However it did to me, what I saw was a very well made, beautifully scored and directed and well acted film. I am all for visually stunning movies. Stunning isn't enough for me, the whole film right down to the cinematography to the evocative costumes, sets and scenery looks exquisite. And need I mention the wonderful paintings? Add to that strong direction, Desplat's most haunting and most beautifully-used score, a script that doesn't feel at all stilted and a moving story and you have a great film. But I cannot mention the cast, Colin Firth and Tom Wilkinson are splendid as always, and Scarlett Johanssen is at her loveliest. In conclusion, may seem like a cliché, but this film is like the paintings featured, a work of art. 9/10 Bethany Cox

A good movie

Back in 2003, Scarlett Johansson had her breakthrough performance with ‘Lost in Translation’ (which I actually found slightly underwhelming but I should give it another shot though) but she is also showed up in this flick which seems to be rather forgotten nowadays. Personally, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie but I was positively surprised. The first thing I enjoyed is that the makers didn’t make it ambiguous like ‘The Last King of Scotland’ which was very manipulative in making the viewers believe that it was a true story which it wasn’t (I’m still pissed off about this in fact). Indeed, right from the start, it was obvious the whole thing was a big fantasy about what might have or not have happened when Vermeer painted his most famous painting. As a result, you get a very interesting study about class struggle, about the artistic process and about a possible romance which was never consumed. So, there was some good stuff, the movie also looked really good but it was missing something to become really remarkable. I don’t know, maybe the whole thing was a little too dry for my taste. Still, even though it might not be a masterpiece, it is still a pretty good flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Scarlett Johansson is cute and fragile in this movie. It's a little bit slow, but beautifull. Good movie to watch if you are not tired.

The Skills of an Artist

Posted : 11 years, 11 months ago on 22 May 2012 08:28

Hello, little girl, my name is The Artist. Because I am The Artist, I create pictures. This is, you might say, my ancient profession, yes. Pictures, they are what I create. And painting, that is how I make them, and I call them "paintings".

Little girl, these words might not fit okay inside your head, but fear nothing! Our oeconomy being this primitive, we basically just use you to fetch water and shit, any-way.

But! You must remember that I am The Artist! And, since I am The Artist, I draw pictures, very very slowly. If you draw something, you might go at, say, average speed, but this this is Holland Many Years Back, and since I am The Artist, I must create the painting very very slowly, and using, eh, how you say, a very, eh, slow speed.

Yes, I am The Artist, and I will be creating you as Girl With A Pearl Earring, but only very very slowly, gradually, and using a rather slow speed. You accept this, little girl, you, eh, sit still, and, additionally, we please ask, that, perhaps you try to be as boring as possible, just the way I do for you.

After all, we would not want them to think that this Dutch land, it becomes feisty, eh? No, not in these ancient times.

And, with these sayings being downloaded this successfully, we are now almost ready to begin the process of very-slowness.

*'The priest is here to see you'*

Oh, okay, fine, let him in; I am practically a priest myself.

.....

P.S. Don't bother with Flaubert, either.

(7/10)
