Gunga Din (1939)

At this point in his career, George Stevens had only directed musicals and comedies, thus I believe he was the wrong choice to direct an action/adventure epic. The action sequences themselves in Gunga Din have no suspense or urgency to them, while none of the characters in the movie stood out to me bar Cary Grant who did mange to carry the movie along, well because, he's Cary Grant.

It's a Wonderful World (1939)

I was beginning to question if there remained any Jimmy Stewart gems for me to discover, making this film a pleasant surprise. The exposition at the beginning and end of the film regarding a murder case which had me confused from the very beginning prevents me from giving this movie a higher score, but the chemistry Stewart and Claudette Colbert made the film a joy to watch, with this being the most I've enjoyed a Colbert performance to date.

I couldn't connect with any of the characters, but the film was both funny and weird enough that I never got bored.
