Throughout the 1990's, MGM was barely emphasizing the UA name at all. MGM felt content to embrace their distribution and re-release rights to the many classic UA releases from the past but didn't seem too terribly concerned about the company's present or future. The fiasco of the short lived MGM-Pathe merger led to no new UA films at all throughout much of the first half of the 90's. While the second half was a bit more active, it still led to a total of less than 30 films for the entire decade. Some were still notable though. For example, there was Nicolas Cage's Academy Award winning performance in "Leaving Las Vegas", the smash hit comedy "The Birdcage" (a remake of "La Cage aux Folles") and Pierce Brosnan brought the long running "James Bond" series perhaps its biggest popularity since the Sean Connery days when he took on the iconic role. Still, it was clear that MGM merely saw UA as just another "label" that they could attach to a film at random. The glory days of this legendary company were long gone.
At only 29 films, this is the shortest UA filmography listing by far. The final chapter will tell the story of UA from 2000 to the present day.
