Engrossing and suspenseful from start to finish, strong cast, good imagery, an absorbing (& ultimately sad) story plus an intriguing ending... what's not to like?!

The Road (2009) (2009)

A well-told and persuasively realistic, but bleak, story.
The whole movie is very sombre with it's convincing post apocalyptic settings and the feeling of hopelessness throughout - there are some moments that are quite chilling too, yet I still found something about it quite beautiful & completely engaging.

Four Lions (2010)

Really very funny despite the subject it centres on, and you needn't expect any religion-bashing or preaching - this is basically focusing on a set of great characters, with flawed ideas & humourous outcomes.
Great dialogue & acting ~ an all-in-all decent British comedy which shows a bit of heart too.

What an incredibly beautiful movie!
Visually exhilarating and immersive, great (I know, not original but still enjoyable) story & acting.
A movie that deserves it's hype in my opinion.. and one I'd happily watch again.

Cracks (2009)

What starts as a simple story turns into something quite dark & uncomfortable. Reminiscent of the kind of obsessive schoolgirl behaviour as shown in the movie Heavenly Creatures.. and as watchable. I thought Eva Green played the role of 'Miss G' perfectly too.

Oddly compelling despite it's disturbing subject matter. Well-filmed & great acting but the film contains a bizarre mix of darkly funny moments and hard-to-watch scenes.
Realistic and memorable, well worth the watch.

Kick-Ass (2010)

Great characters (Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl in particular!), a funny story that also has a heart and plenty of action. This film is a very entertaining take on the comic-book superhero movies and I thought the soundtrack throughout the movie was cool too.

Where the Wild Things Are (2009)

This was very different to how I'd imagined it would be.
'Where the Wild Things Are' is unexpectedly deep despite looking like a fun kids fantasy adventure - I think kids watching may enjoy it on a basic level but not grasp the full meaning of the story.
Slow paced but an interesting concept overall with equally interesting characters, and visually quite beautiful.

The Lovely Bones

A movie with a dark story that coincides with heavenly imagery. Great story (the book has more detail but I understand that you can't fit everything into a film) - & great performances from the actors.
One I'd watch again for the beautiful visuals alone.

A Perfect Getaway

Much better than I anticipated. The plot sounds very unoriginal but actually keeps you guessing and has an entertaining twist. Visually this is a very nice watch due to the filming location too.
Definitely worth a look.

Probably one of the slowest intros I've seen.. maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a movie I knew nothing about nor had any great expectations of!
Needless to say I fell asleep 'trying' to watch this dull film.

Great concept for a story & visually brilliant to watch. This is one that will definitely screw with your mind but isn't *as complicated* as many would lead you to believe. Just don't blink in case you miss something!

A fun zombie comedy/horror - I liked the story aswell as the characters (great cameo). This is fairly short for a movie too (1hr 20mins) - so no bum-numbing!
Really enjoyable.

Skyline (2010)

To be honest (& snobby) the cast was an early indication of this film not being as cool as it looked in the trailer! There isn't really a plot so the only thing about this movie that is half-decent is the special effects. The ending made me think I may aswell have been watching an average sci-fi tv series.. "on the next episode..".

A pretty entertaining movie. I liked the story, characters & atmosphere of the film, plus it had just the right amount of blood & gore!
Maybe not as conclusive as I would have liked, but a really decent addition to the Vampire genre nevertheless.

I'm surprised by how much I liked this.
A high-octane action-adventure with a good story and likeable characters. Quite visually impressive too, rich in detail & location shots.
A fast-paced & fun family movie.

The film pretty much starts on a good note, with some effective menacing characters/moments throughout.. and the effects were pretty good.
A 'leave-your-brain-at-the-door' film.

Everything about this movie is quite charming - the story & characters, the filming style & the soundtrack.
Offbeat but down-to-earth & somewhat refreshing to watch.
A more *real* take on the rom-com genre ~ and a more enjoyable film for that reason!

Chloe (2010)

This is the remake of the French movie Nathalie - and a sexed-up version too.
Mostly in keeping with the story of the original (as I remember, apart from the abrupt ending here which I don't remember in Nathalie's case). Chloe only differs in subtlety & the fact that I found the start of the film too contrived. The characters do draw you in however, especially Chloe as portrayed by Amanda Seyfried.
I liked the soundtrack & generally this is a good remake (even though I prefer the French original).

Fast-paced and lively action with a decent 'guess-game' plot made this an easy movie to view.
I'm slightly biased but I thought Angelina made a pretty good action-woman/spy and the OTT stunts were fun to watch.
Very entertaining.

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)

An energetic opening with action scenes through start to end but this movie seemed to have very little to offer by way of story.
I enjoyed some of the previous films but didn't care too much for this at all. It may have been more fun to watch in 3D as overall this was ok for action & stunts - nothing more.

Looking for Eric (2009)

A gritty British comedy-drama about a man who's life is hitting the skids and so it's up to his hero & imaginary life-coach - legendary footballer Eric Cantona - to help sort him out.
Great to see Cantona in this movie and all round good acting from the cast.
Amusing & realistic at times ~ Good film.

Robin Hood (2010)

This is actually Robin Hood.. before he was Robin Hood. A prequel to the legend, and so the film is more about the historical situation to which led to his notoriety.
Still, good performances from a great cast, interesting story and epic scenes make this worth the watch.
Looking forward to the sequel too.

A gripping opening scene leads you through this intense revenge movie.
I thought Gerard Butler really made his character - a guy you can't help but side with, which leads me to the fact that the movie loses points with me for the 'twist' and an ending that was disappointing to say the least.

Well, this is a political thriller.. and I managed to stay awake! Seriously, probably not my kind of genre and this is definitely a slow-burner.. yet, the movie actually became more intriguing & interesting as it moved along. Good cast & memorable ending too.
Wouldn't rewatch this but it was worth the first viewing.

Predators (2010)

Alien Vs Predator eat your heart out! This movie is a good effort of a follow-up to the original movie (once again, the original here could not be topped anyway).
Plenty of action, a decent mix of characters.. though I don't think Adrian Brody completely pulled off the action-hero stance - this despite his extra gruff voice (LOL).
An entertaining movie.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Loved the imagery & so visually this is very much eye-candy. Fun characters too, the standout being Helena Bonham Carter's 'Red Queen'.
An enjoyable film but dare I say not as dark as I would have expected from Tim Burton!
I'm always drawn to his movies though and find them thoroughly entertaining, this was no exception.

The Fourth Kind (2009)

Incredibly boring and I thought it was ridiculous that they tried so hard to pass this movie off as 'based-on-true-events'.
The mock video's ('alien possessions') were slightly good to watch but they only made for a tiny part of the whole film.
In fact the poster to this looks more interesting than the film was to watch!

I liked the futuristic robot theme that this movie has, even though it's no longer an original concept (very similar to the recent Gamer aswell as I,Robot/Blade Runner/A.I. etc). Entertaining action sequences but very predictable plot.

An enjoyable thriller that does kind-of keep you guessing. Even when the plot appears quite obvious you still have this little niggling doubt about whether all is what it seems - I'm being cryptic so as not to spoil the story!
Not flawless & personally I found one scene a little misleading, but for supernatural movie fans this is worth a watch.

Those who claim that this movie is hilarious - you lie!! lol. It was pretty comical at times, Diddy was (dare I say it..) funny, and the story & characters generally worked well.
Sometimes unecessary as far as "sexual humour" goes, but this was entertaining enough.

A remake of the (classic) 80's movie by the same name.. and a good one at that.
Decent cast & acting, this movie shares obvious similarities to the original but is aimed at a slightly younger audience & manages to stand up in it's own right.

Good effects - childish dialogue & acting (one for the kids then!) and I didn't care for the story, which seemed to drag on in parts.
Can't compare it to the tv series (never watched it) and although this wasn't as terrible as I had expected, it wasn't great either. Average.

Incredibly cute & beautifully animated - this is much better than the 2nd Toy Story movie. Cool new characters, a story to keep everybody entertained (humour for the grown-ups too) and a little emotional in parts (*I didn't cry though GUYS! lol*).
Great fun for a family night in.

A slow-paced revenge thriller that nearly lost my attention in moments but picks up towards the end.
There are some good scenes portraying the lead character's (Mel Gibson as Thomas Craven) bond with his onscreen daughter which coincides with his hunt for her killer.
Not bad.

Good chemistry between the actors and I liked the backdrop to the film. An entertaining story that moves along at a good pace.
I think Robert Downey Jr. captured the spirit of Sherlock really well too.

"What would you do?" - this is one of those movies that creates that conversation! (zip wire anyone? lol). A plot which is very flawed but does create tension & keeps you watching to see what the outcome is.

OTT (& far-fetched) action with a generous helping of humour certainly brings back memories of the original A-Team series. The new-faced characters worked well (liked the cameo thrown in too). Fans of the show should find this quite entertaining ~ I did!

Less of a zombie movie & more of a low budget "are-they-really-actors?" family feud film.
Comical in places (probably even when it wasn't meant to be) and fairly entertaining despite it's dire plot, i.e. I managed to watch the whole thing without turning off!

The fourth (& final?) of the Shrek movies, this is an improvement on the last - but not as good as the first two in my opinion.
An ok story with additional characters that I thought were entertaining (Rumpelstiltskin, Pied Piper & the witches).
Still a fun & amusing family movie even though it lacks a bit of the charm of the original.

Based on a novel that I've heard good things about (though never got round to reading) - I was surprised that this adaption seemed so lackluster. I liked the victorian-era setting, but the story moves at a slow pace and only became interesting at the end.
Nothing better than 'ok'.

A classic and traditional Christmas story remade as a lively animated feature that captures the magic of the Christmas season wonderfully.

Knight and Day

This for me was very hit-and-miss.
The start didn't grab me at all but the action scenes held all the fun in this film. The humour worked 'sometimes' but I wasn't fully feeling the romance between the characters. Though in fairness this is a movie that seemed to get better as it went along.
Entertaining enough.

The Experiment (2010)

Great casting & good character & experiment portrayal make this a thought-provoking & watchable thriller.
My main problem with this was the ending - the chaos before an abrupt calm as the 'experiment' comes to an end. Everything (and everyone? - certainly one person it seemed) strangely somewhat forgotten?!
Good film but flawed, especially in it's conclusion.

The effects were pretty good, likeable characters & a fun but clichéd Disney story. Although not outstanding for it's genre, this is a popcorn movie for the whole family to watch.
