The Domain of the Moment (1977)
12/30/16
Directed by: Stan Brakhage
Does a lot of what I loved about Duplicity III and does it arguably better and I really loved how focused this film was. Unfortunately the final segment being by far the weakest does it hurt it somewhat. Either way this is another masterpiece.

I think I marked out for every frame of this. My heart is racing and there are tears in my eyes. An absolute masterpiece.

Directed by: Juzo Itami
The main plot and characters are all really cute, fun and endearing and undeniably great but the real magic is in the little cut-away stories that pop up here and there. This is a very special film.

Zootopia (2016)

The ham-fisted social commentary served the story more than preached thankfully and was pretty fun despite a solid helping of cliches.

Bed and Sofa (1927)
12/24/16
Directed by: Abram Room
A really interesting story for the time and one of the few films I've seen from this decade where the pacing isn't ridiculous. It's really beautiful and touching at moments with some genuine laughs. Ahead of its time at least by a few years.

Has both some of my favourite and least favourite Brakhage footage. Wasn't a fan of the snap zooms and pull-outs either.

23rd Psalm Branch: Part I (1967)
12/18/16
Directed by: Stan Brakhage
A little too thematically bland and the stock footage used throughout wasn't especially interesting. Brakhage's editing is always a treat though and it did get more engaging towards the end.

The first half is extremely strong with a really cool set, neat shots and editing and the story starts out really interesting but unfortunately it gets really standard in the second half.

Suffers greatly from bad dialog, characters, choreography and editing. Fortunately it sets up for the game to have a potentially interesting plot but the film itself was very generic though it did improve towards the end.

Very Spielberg, very Hollywood, you know. Not bad but has its tacky moments. Goes by reasonably quick considering the run-time.

One of the most offensive attempts at the found footage genre. What the fuck is subtlety or suspense because spooky shit is just happening the second the camera turns on. Also every spook is CGI and has a ridiculous sound effect, how do I take that seriously?

Deep Red (1975)
10/21/16
Directed by: Dario Argento
Like every Argento film, the mystery aspect makes zero sense whatsoever and outside of his stylistic flourishes, Argento is a pretty shit director. That being said though, this one had some solid moments hidden throughout but sadly it still amounts to little more than a complete clusterfuck.

As far as I can tell this is the first "shaky-cam" style found footage film and to its credit I think there's only one blatant cut and only one shot that was obviously "planned". It may be a bit too straight-forward but its short and passably entertaining.

Definitely toned down in comparison to Jailhouse 41, its still a cool movie but just doesn't quite have the same magic as the previous entries.

I can't claim to know much about mumblecore but this film seems to hit all the horror beats whilst never breaking away from that mumblecore feel and I found that really impressive. On top of that, the film is also really enjoyable.

I am so disappointed. The CGI mixed with more traditional art looked beyond unpleasant, the music is very hit-or-miss, and the change in appearance certainly didn't help the fact that this so rarely even felt like it was from the Monogatari series. Just not really enjoyable on any level.

A fun little mystery that doesn't do itself in by trying to be super tense and serious. You can see a lot of Rivette's hallmarks beginning to form here and minus some amateur gaffs here and there its a pretty well made film. The music is also really rad.
