I am astounded by the graphics, especially the locales, that use a mix of prerendered static images and FMVs and sometimes even scenes begin without loading, as you're playing. It was controversial because of the innovative new systems, like Draw and Junction, it also has a successful card game within. It was controversial also the focus on the two main protagonists and lack of focus on other characters. The story themes are love and time.
