WALL·E (2008)
I've never seen so much beauty and heart in a movie before. One of the most artistically, most inspiring and most technically perfect movies I have ever had the pleasure to watch.
Veed's rating:

After re-watching the KnK saga in chronological order (with some knowledge on what was going on and knowing the characters) I have to say:
One of the most intense things I have ever seen.
The beginning of the movie is gripping, the middle is complicated, the ending is mind-blowing. When things start to get pretty intense you understand what was the meaning of those re-winds and mixed past and present scenes (took me a second watch). Just watch the re-awakening of Shiki in the apartment complex. All ends up making sense (I do agree the movie in not exactly easy to watch, especially if you are going for just some entertainment, the story IS complicated)
10/10 for a near-perfect movie whose masterful animation and unforgettable soundtrack make this one of the most memorable experiences in anime.

Veed's rating:

This was the most amazing anime movie I've ever seen, it blew my mind away. From the characters, to the quality of the animation and the soundtrack, to the over the top action, it was all perfect.
I don't know if I like this new aproach to the story better than the original Evangelion (for instance: the scene where Eva 01 goes berserk on Eva 03 felt a little more disturbing in the series, but in the movie it is superb nevertheless, in a different way), I just know that if I ignore the original events, this new direction is simply out of this world and totally worth the revamp.
For me the greatest improvements so far are the work they have done with Shinji and Rei (and I never cared much for Asuka and her personality, in fact I like her better in this movie), it's really developing into something beautiful, and then the work they have done with the angels, truly otherwordly and mystical entities that really make you feel it's an impossible struggle. I really liked the way they ignored the angel in the magma and brought us a much more fearsome and unique beast of a 10th angel, just an example.
In short, I'm not saying it's better or worse than the original Evangelion, just that it's too good, whether you compare it to the TV series or not.

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999)
One of the most amazing stories I have ever seen, both visually and dramatically, anime or not. I was literally overwhelmed by the power of this movie, the story is so well directed and with perfect pacing in my honest opinion.
The movie starts by explaining the background and then the actual story begins with a bang. It puts you into the hell that is the presented society, it throws tragedy at your face, it gives you time to digest the story, follow the plot and understand the characters (Fuse is one of the most interesting characters I have ever seen in the anime medium) and it delivers one of the most thrilling endings ever with the only possible sad conclusion.
I can't believe I took so much time to watch this movie or even hear of it. I watched it with some expectations since I've heard good things of it and it sounded like something I would like, but nothing overly excessive really. In the end I was blown away by its artistically presentation and depth, in the edge of my seat the whole time. Memorable story, to remember and to rewatch.

Princess Mononoke (1997)
One of those movies you don't see every day, month or year. The story is simple, modest and at the same time, groundbreaking and epic for its mix of reality and fantasy (actually the premise is very similiar to Nausicaa, Miyazaki's first Ghibli). The characters are also very simple, you can't help but sympathize with them, even with the antagonists. Each one is unique, well developed and with its own fundamented and reasonable goal.
The artistic work and production values are simply stunning! I will go and say: the best the 90's have seen! This movie will entertain you and make you think about its message for there's a lot more to it than gods, demons, ecological messages, smooth and violent action sequences or beautiful emotional scenes. Watch how every character's action in this world can affect everyone and everything around them.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
This was incredible... I was speechless after watching this movie. "How to Train Your Dragon" gave me a feeling that I have never felt watching a (animated) movie before. I can't believe I went with such low expectations about this movie and ended utterly amazed. I burst into laughs and tears throughout the movie, such a rare endearing and most outstanding story.
Veed's rating:

As if the amounts of adrenaline and entertainment weren't already huge enough in the TV series, this movie pushes it to the next level. I can't really delve much into this, because I'd be writing the same I wrote for the TTGL TV series. However, after watching both "stories" I realized Gainax gives you two choices here: You start the journey, pick one from the two routes you are given (2nd part of the series or 2nd movie) to ultimately reach the destination. And the conclusion stays with you even after awhile, with whichever route you chose...
You could say this one has the more happier ending, but no matter how you look at it, both Movies and Series reach unimaginable proportions of perfect story-telling and over-the-top excitement!

Veed's rating:

Nausicaa, The trigger to the founding of Studio Ghibli and still one of Miyazaki's best works in my opinon. The ecoligical message, the fantastic story and spectacular artistic work are all there.
Veed's rating:

The Lion King (1994)
One of the best fantasy stories I have seen. The movie excels in the story, characters and soundtrack departments and it definitely has the most memorable intro of any movie... ever.
Veed's rating:

Sword of the Stranger (2007)
What a fantastic movie, I greatly enjoyed it. The story is a bit generic, but the artistic work and production values make this one amazing experience.
Veed's rating:

Memories (1995)
This was AMAZING, every single episode is a masterpiece, very unique on their own and with a very interesting concept/theme.
Veed's rating:

Wow this movie was so good, I can't believe how good it was, I guess I wasn't expecting it. The story is just amazing and the characters are real... yup they must be, it's the only plausible reason I can find to explain the fact that I was so touched and moved just by watching the kids playing the violin and singing upstairs with the old man and his music buddies joining them when they arrive home.
The movie really has very touching moments and profound quotes, especially by the old man. It was fascinating listening to him telling his stories and watching his amazing wonder shop.

Veed's rating:

Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Speecheless...words cannot describe this movie, it's just too powerful. No doubt, an amazing story, one to be remembered.
Veed's rating:

Aladdin (1992)
Another memorable movie, the characters are simply genial (ha get it?) and the highest point of this movie is the humour, while having a pretty good story as well. The Genie is one of the most memorable disney characters and the most hilarious thats for sure. It also has great animation and one of the best soundtracks, second only to The Lion King's.
Veed's rating:

Finding Nemo (2003)
Oh my what a cute story in a fast-paced and even thrilling adventure through the ocean! If you ask me, a rare breed of film, one that can mix elements like fantasy, humour, adventure, suspense, drama and fish as main characters with a tremendous force of will (or a forgetful memory!).
Seriously, this movie surprised in an outstanding good way becoming one of my favorite animated movies of all time.

Toy Story 3 (2010)
What can I say? Pixar made me tear up again... for a bunch of toys... this is ridiculous! Fantastic story once again =)
A story for kids and adults with real characters, disguised as an adventure with toys.

Veed's rating:

Amazing movie, and while not perfect, it had a geat finale to this story. If there's something I'll never forget about the KnK saga was the mindblowing soundtrack and animation. I consider this last installment to be the second best of the 7, especially because of the beautiful ending, it would be almost impossible to surpass the masterpiece that was the 5th anyway.
Veed's rating:

VISUAL SPECTACLE!
Splendid movie, how can you ever be disappointed with Mr. Otomo and the Studio 4ºC team when they release things such as this? It's impossible... How can people dislike this style of movie is beyond me! I love sci-fi stories in the old european industrial era setting, and this movie freaking delievers at that! Characters, story and everything else was good, but what really steals the show are the production values, a trademark of Studio 4ºC, some of the best in the anime industry.

Veed's rating:

Akira (1988)
Was this really made in 1988? Impressive in every aspect. One of the most entertaining movies I've seen that's for sure, but it is somewhat hard to watch, not because of its violence or fast pace, but because I couldn't completely understand what was going on. It's a movie with a lot of symbolism, an interesting philosophical concept, awesome animation, a fast-paced story and chaos. Doesn't get a better score because I couldn't completely understand it and because it never delved much on the characters (even on the main protagonist/antagonist).
If you liked this what are you waiting for to read the graphic novel that inspired it? Akira, by the same author.

Veed's rating:

I really liked it, especially the beginning and the ending. I liked it better than the first, found it more interesting and entertaining overall, but I cannot rate this movie without taking into account the first one. While the first movie works out as a standalone work, one cannot understand and truly appreciate the second movie without watching the first one.
Now this is what I call deep and thought provoking entertainment, this level of mind-rape can't be compared to the more farfetch'd (and overkill) one shown in Evangelion. I dunno, but to some extent Evangelion was only entertainment, while GitS felt a little more than that. You can also clearly see how this movie inspired future works as its first counterpart did (although not to the same extent).
Why I compared it to Evangelion I have no idea... maybe because both were deep and had a very psychological and philosophical theme.

Veed's rating:

I really don't know what to say... The first part was amazing, continued from the last events of episode 24 from the series quite nicely. I could feel the fear and determination of the characters and the intensity of the battle was just out of this world... Now the second part was a lot harder to watch, seriously it does screw with you (especially if you really delved into the complexety of the characters), it was beautiful and disturbing at the same time, but its heavy symbolism, artistic and abstract style makes it hard to fully comprehend and the ending didn't quite satisfy me. Seriously Gainax, I need to rest now...
Veed's rating:

Ghost in the Shell (1995)
I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, maybe I had high expectations for it, it was still a great movie though. Daring and revolutionary considering it came from 1995, most media exploring GitS theme was released years later.
Veed's rating:

Paprika (2006)
What a journey! This movie started pretty WTF for me, but after a while I got into the mood of the film and it was one hell of a trip to the land of dreams! Believe it or not I can identify a lot with this.
In some scenes I had this feeling of Deja-vu due to my previous watching of Inception... I guess Nolan took some ideas from this film.

Perfect Blue (1997)
First of all, this movie will confuse you and it will make you think, it might even screw with your mind because the plot isn't exactly simple or easy. Those that say that got it all figured out ever since the beginning are lying. This is a psychological thriller that knows how to make use of suspense and how to mix reality and fantasy to the point of confusing the viewer while developing a complex and concise plot. It's really a murder mystery filled with twists that will throw some fake hints at you, with a great direction and very powerful scenes that contribute to the nature of this movie. This movie is for adults, seriously, we are dealing with nudity, a rape scene, explicit violence, gore and a very complex plot, so please... take that into consideration.
Overall I really enjoyed this movie, it's a suspense and mystery ride with a very intelligent plot and an ending that it will make you initially think that the whole thing didn't make any sense, but if you think carefully about all the little details everything ends up making perfect sense. It's one of those movies that might require a second viewing.
Doesn't get a better score from me because in spite of being original and a masterpiece in the anime medium, out of it, it's nothing new.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)
Even if it's not my thing and is far from my genre of entertainment, this movie was amazing, the story and the characters are fantastic, great production values. I'm glad I picked it up after hearing good things about it.
Veed's rating:

Very interesting movie. Intelligent, funny and romantic, really liked it.
For me the highlight was the ending, it affected me emotionally, the characters were all very likable.

A wonderful story. I really liked the atmosphere and its symbolism. Everything was good about this little gem: the story, the music, the visuals, the character and the ending.
Veed's rating:

Only Yesterday (1991)
This was seriously my first attempt of a really "Slice of Life" anime piece of work, and was I completely stunned by the amazing story this turned out to be... It was enjoyable, interesting and rather thoughtful since the very beggining, simply because the characters were so simple, realistic, well-developed and most important of all, likeable. The ending was outstanding, it showed the romantic side of this story and it was so good and emotional it made me shed some tears, something I almost never do out of Drama.
Miyazaki may be the most popular, with the more thrilling and adventurous anime films out there, making absolutely gorgeous and entertaining movies IMO, but with this movie, in my eyes, Takahata proved to be on par with (if not superior to) Miyazaki when it comes to directing a movie with a memorable story and realistc characters.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001)
A great movie that is basically an extended adventure with Spike and the rest of the gang, Cowboy bebop style. The new characters are not super original, but they are good ones, the story is interesting, the visuals are outstanding and the action sequences breathtaking! More Spike and adventure in a big Cowboy Bebop episode style? Yes please!
Veed's rating:

Goshu the Cellist (1982)
This story follows a learning cellist who throughout the movie learns to improve his skills with the cello with the help from various animals. How can this movie be so unknown is beyond me, from the animal characters to the music it was all marvelous and well directed. Light-hearted entertainment for anyone at anytime.
The entire movie was entertaining, but my favorite part was the one with the Tanuki! So interesting and so cute, the duo was fantastic!
Takahata knew how to make movies long before Studio Ghibli came to be.

My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
What an amazing movie, it's a nice break from complicated, action oriented or fast-paced plots, this movie is so light hearted and charming that it's pure joy watching it. Oh and the quality of the art and animation is just amazing, seriously some of the best I've seen, no less from Miyazaki.
Veed's rating:

Millennium Actress (2001)
This is the kind of love stories that I like to see, deep and meaningful. Another very good movie from Madhouse Studios.
Veed's rating:

Toy Story 2 (1999)
Another hilarious one. It's the sequel of the much acclaimed, original and revolutionary Toy Story. The first one had a very interesting story and introduced all the characters, but this movie, just like what happen with "Ice Age" focus so much more on comedy and the already-known-to-all characters in crazy adventures. And I freaking loved it.
Veed's rating:

Porco Rosso (1992)
Great story, superb characters and amazing visuals as expected from Miyazaki. The movie has a lot of funny moments and interesting scenes, specially the quotes from Porco. It's a simple, funny and intelligent movie that I would recommend to anyone.
Veed's rating:

This was a great movie indeed! This is what happens when you mix Lupin III, Tomb Raider and 007 into the same story. And with the skills of the director it can only turn out to be good!
I can't believe I didn't pick up this before, having watched practically almost all of Miyazaki's works until now, this movie still remains fresh and entertaining, on par with the likes of Spirited Away and Porco Rosso and better than the acclaimed Howl's Moving Castle and Kiki's Delivery Service on my book.

Veed's rating:

Shrek 2 (2004)
This movie is breathtaking! It doesn't give you a break in laughs or thrilling action! And it even throws some romance to the mix!
Veed's rating:

Neo Tokyo (1987)
That was insanely good! On the same fashion as Memories, it's a un-related, 3 part story, usually set in an alternate reality/future with a lot of psychologic and symbolic depth. A breath of fresh air.
Check out Memories and Robot Carnival as well.

The Cat Returns (2002)
What an amusing movie. A rather simple, funny and entertaining story with very cool characters! Having watched Whisper of the Heart is not essential (in fact the movies are completely different), but it helps to know the background behind Baron, even if he is the only link between the two movies.
And it was amazing the quantity of cats that kept falling in this movie, especially the ones being thrown out of the window xD

Spirited Away (2001)
I don't think it was the masterpiece a lot of people say it is, but it was definitely one the most original movies I've ever seen.
Veed's rating:

Mind Game (2004)
A wild and psychedelic journey of insanity and determination like you have never, ever experienced. I simply love Studio 4ºC
