Brink of Life (1958)

I love when a director known for period pieces and sometimes supernatural elements makes a stripped down, modern day film where nothing fantastical happens; and in fact, this film is the polar opposite of a fantasy. Brink of Life opens with an event (focusing solely on Bibi Andersson) that could be the climax of another film, and Bergman uses that intensity and sort of finality to shift the focus to the other introduced characters for a while. Bibi Andersson doesn't even turn out to be the main character, if there is one. With the subject matter being that of births, miscarriages and nursing, specifically women's issues (at least in the 50s) and that we're given such incredible characters, some that are at the lowest part of their lives, Bergman is not afraid to show you their vulnerability, yet they're still making hard decisions, decisions one would expect to be considered at the very least taboo in the 1950s. They are powerful women, and this film is powerfully feminine.
