The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
12/31/17
Directed by: Yorgos Lanthimos
The atmosphere, camerawork and stilted performances make this very uncomfortable to watch and, though maybe a hair lackluster in its final act, is really entertaining and captivating. Lanthimos is a good boy.

Thought it was pretty basic but the last shot really pulls it together. Good aesthetic also.

Completely enamored with the editing and just the texture and feel of the 35mm. This is really wonderful.

Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962)
12/23/17
Directed by: Agnes Varda
A little rough around the edges but the cinematography and shot composition is generally on point and the Michel Legrand soundtrack is lovely. It doesn't 100 percent click until the last few chapters but the ends justifies the means or whatever.

Antiporno (2016) (2016)
12/09/17
Directed by: Sion Sono
Part of the Nikkatsu "Roman Porno" reboot series where directors make quick, cheap films with full creative control so long as there is sex throughout. Sono uses this opportunity to muse about freedom of speech and feminist issues in Japan. Its heavy-handed and over-the-top but it is fun and creative. It reminds me of his film "I Am Keiko" in its delivery and design but not nearly as disastrous.

Lady Bird (2017)
12/08/17
Directed by: Greta Gerwig
It had its funny bits but its plain and really disjointed. Feels like it could be any rando indie film from the mid to late 2000's.

Some great b-movie moments, not awful pacing and some good old 1950's misogyny. Unfortunately, half the film is at night and its impossible to see anything in those scenes.

Black Christmas (2006)
10/28/17
Directed by: Glen Morgan
At its best moments its a solid horror movie with bonus points for some of the really cute ideas it has involving the Christmas theme but the backstory and probably the last half hour didn't do much for me.

Begotten (1989) (1991)
10/25/17
Directed by: E. Elias Merhige
I mark out for anything overexposed to this extent and I loved how the sound effects and music were equally muddled and while given what it is, it certainly could have been more of a slog but I'm still not sure it needed to be a feature length.

Blood and Black Lace (1976) (1964)
10/24/17
Directed by: Mario Bava
Of course it looks great, being a giallo and all (plus some tasty Eastmancolor) and its not nearly as convoluted as other films in the genre, plus the ADR is surprisingly tolerable. Unfortunately, its also very dull and the "whodunit" aspect of the film is not even slightly compelling with all these completely undeveloped characters.

As Above, So Below (2014)
10/02/17
Directed by: John Erick Dowdle
It's moderately fun but its clear that the only reason it was shot as a found footage film is because it was the easiest way considering the cramped locations. When shooting found footage you kind of have to play by the rules and this film throws out all of those rules almost immediately and having that happen throughout most of the film is distracting to say the least. On the plus side, there's some cool scenes (even if they don't work for found footage) and its entertaining enough throughout. The pacing is pretty rough too as it really just feels like just non-stop shit happening.

There's some really fun and wacky bits but I feel like I should have liked this more. Seems to be a trend with me and Oshima's work. Bonus points for that amazing song in it though.

Phoenix Forgotten (2017)
09/26/17
Directed by: Justin Barber
I know people rag on the found footage genre all the time but I still genuinely think there's a lot of interesting things that can be done with it. Now, saying this was an interesting film might be a bit of a stretch but it did have a lot of positive aspects. I thought the presentation was good and its fairly well paced and the filler never feels like filler which is pretty often the case with these. While I don't think it was effective as a horror movie I do commend the restraint shown to not throw in any fake scares or even a single jump scare. This actually felt like someone tried instead of just being shit out by a studio.

Roma (1972)
09/26/17
Directed by: Federico Fellini
The whole film is really solid but there's also more than a handful of absolute masterclass scenes, in particular the variety show scene might be one of my all time favourites. Fellini is quite possibly the best ever.

Mother! (2017)
09/25/17
Directed by: Darren Aronofsky
I really don't know who this film is for. The entire film is allegory but its just so on the nose that there's nothing interesting for anyone following it and the narrative doesn't stand on its own so there's nothing there for anyone not picking up on the allegory. The best thing I can say about it is that it passed the time well enough.

Urusei Yatsura: Only You (1983)

As much as I appreciate the music choices not being uber popular songs (Guardians of the Galaxy) and the music gimmick itself is a lot less obnoxious than I was expecting but the film was just kind of boring and not memorable despite being generally well-made.

Shirome (2010)

So basically they just actually took idol group Momoiro Clover Z on a haunted house tour and built a movie around it and it completely feels like it. Its certainly not effective in anyway but its short and the girls are charming enough to carry it.

This certainly continues the trend of Shiraishi's traditional horror movies paling in comparison to his found-footage style films. Its still a passable film despite some major logic issues and its not bogged down with the typical, drawn-out research and/or detective work sequences that tend to plague this genre though that does makes it feel a tad underdeveloped.
