The Favourite (2018)
12/27/18
Directed by: Yorgos Lanthimos
It's funny. Shot kinda bad some of the time but the editing is real punchy.

Apocalypse After (2018)
12/19/18
Directed by: Bertrand Mandico
I was worried about Mandico dabbling in the synthwave aesthetic but it merged with his style pretty seamlessly and the film was fun and had good feel like everything he does.

Roma (2018)
12/19/18
Directed by: Alfonso Cuaron
Almost great but the camerawork was too mechanical and distant to really connect with it. It does get better in the final act though.

Annihilation (2018)
12/03/18
Directed by: Alex Garland
So just about every technical aspect of the film is dog shit, most notably the colour correction, editing and sound mixing, and its also just boring and badly paced. It improves in the final chapter but even then all the cool stuff is stuff I could get out of music videos.

Alps (2011)
11/27/18
Directed by: Yorgos Lanthimos
I liked it overall but I've seen the concept done before in better films though it did get more intriguing in the last act.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
11/25/18
Directed by: Joel & Ethan Coen
Only 2 of the 6 stories are any good and also it looks like garbage.

There's definitely some great stuff here, just a bit inconsistent and has some jank editing.

Directed by: Adina Pintilie
Mostly just your stock, beige, Eurodrama with a quasi-documentary angle being the only real difference. It's very tell, not show and just matter-of-factly muses its topic in mostly unrewarding ways. The music from Einstürzende Neubauten is pretty rad the handful of times it comes up though and its not like its a pain to sit through or anything.

Initially super impressive and engaging but gets less so as it goes on. Still really good overall.

The stop-motion is incredible and is actually very cinematic in how the camera bobs around as if there was a literal cameraman. Really impressive.

Kichiku dai enkai (1997)
10/19/18
Directed by: Kazuyoshi Kumakiri
Mostly just a lame, poorly developed torture-porn type film but elevated a bit by the shot composition (mostly in the final act) that is extremely new-wave inspired and some half-decent special effects.

Gimî hebun (2005)
10/14/18
Directed by: Toru Matsuura
Possibly the most "of its time and place" movie. It's just all the dumbest cliches of the post-Cure Japanese mystery movie. The soundtrack was dope, though it was implemented terribly.

On one hand, its amazing how sudden and visceral Seagal's fight scenes are but on the other hand they're also over extremely fast.

The film itself is obviously terrible but the gimmick is really freaking cool and I do dig the killer's design.

3 Ninjas (1992)
08/23/18
Directed by: Jon Turteltaub
I expected this to be crap and only be good for some cheap nostalgia but what I found was that I didn't actually remember anything from it (except maybe the music?) but also that its kinda fucking awesome.

A soft, meditative film that slowly goes to some strange places and the music (as expected from Tujiko Noriko) is beautiful and appropriately scant.

It's hard to follow for awhile and there's so much bizarre stuff going on but the last few set pieces are incredible and I think a viewing of a proper subtitled version (instead of this hacked up english dub) would probably be amazing.
