Carpenter's remake that took it to another level. A prequel remake was made much later but to no real effect. Watch the prequel first and this one after.
mcdean's rating:
Follow up to the original, identical in theme but multiplied demon babies.
mcdean's rating:
The original Thing movie that is eerie in its depiction of the isolation of the north pole.

Them! (1954)
The best bug movie of the 50's and very eerie with great acting and effects and sound editing. The little girl popped up as "Newt" opposite Sigourney Weaver in the 80's in Aliens.
mcdean's rating:
Takes the idea further, with gruesome results. This series is cheaply made but still has a strong shock factor.

Who doesn't know this one. If you haven't seen it you should. If you don't find it scary and funny at the same time you must be watching the tv remake.

The Funhouse (1981)
After Texas Chainsaw Massacre we got Funhouse. In my opinion a better movie of the two. Has a special nod to old Universal monster flicks.
mcdean's rating:

The often remade but never surpassed classic. This movie is heartbreaking and scary at the same time.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 370 Average listal rating (267 ratings) 5.9 IMDB Rating 6.1
The direct sequel to the classic. The most horror movie inspired of the whole series. Not my favorite of the original series but definitely has its moments.

The second best Bug movie of the 50's. A lot of thought went into this one, and the Mantis's are pretty terrifying. Still waiting for them to do that remake.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 1769 Average listal rating (1177 ratings) 7.6 IMDB Rating 8
This movie freaked people out in the late 60's and is still a jolt to the senses today. Fantastic ape acting but not so much on the human side. The surprise ending is much forgotten now but was well known back in the day.

Based on the John Wyndham book The Midwich Cuckoos this movie has been much copied in silly remakes none of which caught the ghostly eeriness of the original
People who added this item 533 Average listal rating (313 ratings) 7.4 IMDB Rating 7.4
The best ghost movie ever made. Minimal effects and believable characters make this a classic. Based on the Shirley Jackson novelette.

Grizzly (1976)
The famous rip off on Jaws that I think is superior. I know a million + people disagree but this movie has horror factors that a shark just doesn't have. Would love to see the never released sequel or a remake.
mcdean's rating:
The sequel to night of the living dead with an anti consumerism theme. I don't care much for the poorly filmed original.

Child's Play (1988)
Chucky's debut is more serious than his sequels. I like the campy sequels but this one is creepier.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 162 Average listal rating (111 ratings) 6.5 IMDB Rating 6.5
Hammer shlock fest with great performances by Lee, Cushing and of all people Telly Savales, this movie chugs along at a brisk pace the story does too.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 1012 Average listal rating (638 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.4
Frankenstein (1994)
The Robert de Niro monster is second best only to Karloff's and many people have tried. Kennith is great as the doctor and thev truest one to the novel in my opinion.
mcdean's rating:
Strange, funny and horrifying in that order. The third and best of the original series. You have to see this one.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 2244 Average listal rating (1453 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 7.6
The Fly (1986)
Cronenberg's remake of Vincent Price's campy original. Great acting and effects, make up but goes a little too far into humor towards the end.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 1936 Average listal rating (1252 ratings) 7.4 IMDB Rating 7.5
Classic dinner scene of all dinner scenes (a parody is in Rocky Horror Picture Show), ushered in the slasher movies (to a lot of people's dismay) and was remade with little imagination or effect.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 3459 Average listal rating (2451 ratings) 7.9 IMDB Rating 8.4
Aliens (1986) (1986)
The action sequel to Alien which had more aliens more action and blood but less eeriness or realism. Still a lot of bang for your buck.
mcdean's rating:
The remake of the 50's classic. Very well made, focused a lot of the political overtones but lacked the hyper pacing of the small town original.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 4789 Average listal rating (3376 ratings) 8.1 IMDB Rating 8.4
Alien (1979)
the haunted house is a spaceship movie with the best alien creature ever conceived thanks (H.R. Giger!). The chest burster scene has been copied again and again, but it still has punch.
mcdean's rating:
Purists scoffed at the casting of Cruise as Lestat, but in fact he did pretty good. Never a sequel despite it being a hit and it based on the first of Anne Rice's long much acclaimed Vampire series of novels.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 2498 Average listal rating (1709 ratings) 7.4 IMDB Rating 7.7
Halloween (1978)
Carpenter's classic. Eerie, and hardly and blood. Not a tame movie by any means though. Great music.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 2588 Average listal rating (1602 ratings) 7.8 IMDB Rating 8
The movie that ushered in the 70's wave of demonic baby/occult movies. Called the greatest mid period horror movie made, and watching it one has to agree. Jotted with humor perfectly.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 749 Average listal rating (523 ratings) 6.4 IMDB Rating 6.5
Halloween II (1981)
A direct extension of the first movie. It starts on the same night the original ends. If ou liked the first you have to see this one.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 1439 Average listal rating (962 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 7.5
The Omen (1976)
A classic, the birthday scene is one of the best ever filmed. A classic, that spawned sequels, parodies and a remake that was exactly the same movie, but not as effective.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 847 Average listal rating (515 ratings) 7.6 IMDB Rating 7.4
A remake of a silent movie, one of my favorite all time movies. filmed in eastern Europe, great music, locations and acting. My favorite vampire movie.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 104 Average listal rating (49 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 6.8
The Other (1972)
A forgotten classic. This inspired the Omen and many others and is truly horrifying and fascinating at the same time. Farm life has never been creepier.
mcdean's rating:
The McCarthy era classic, the political theme is implied in the story and not slammed into your head. Small town life has never been creepier.
mcdean's rating:
People who added this item 2193 Average listal rating (1519 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.4
Rather slow and hardly any monster, this one does have a lot of solid acting and effect. After Aliens it disappointed a lot of people but on its own is pretty damned good, the ending is a direct nod to "Son of Frankenstein"
mcdean's rating:
The movie that begs the question, is it horror or is it comedy?? The answer is horror but has such insane performances by a zombie corpse among others that you will laugh out loud. But it is a horror movie with the best transformation scene ever filmed.
