"Now then, pay attention, this is important. Each side will carry with them three colours of paint, namely, red for dead, blue for wounded, white for prisoners. If a man is wounded and captured, he gets a dab of blue paint and a dab of white paint. If there's any dispute, you must call for me. I shall carry with me a tin of pink paint and a tin of yellow paint. If I decide he is wounded, not dead, I give him one dash of pink paint, on the other hand, if I think he is dead and not wounded, he gets two dabs of pink paint, and then again of course, if he's not dead, not wounded, not prisoner, he gets one dash of yellow paint and that cancels out the whole thing. Dad's Army is about the Home Guard, which consisted of local volunteers who weren't eligible for normal military service during WW2. This meant that the platoon was made up mainly of older men, but some were from protected professions. Making up the numbers in the series are Private Pike, a naive young man who has a very rare blood type, and Private Walker, a spiv who claims to be allergic to corned beef. The group are led by the local bank manager, George Mainwaring, who appointed himself Captain when the platoon was formed, despite having never seen combat.
