Interesting sci-fi movie that raises some thought-provoking questions about existence, but never really sets about to answering them. Unlike a lot of science fiction, this is very character-driven, which is fairly refreshing. Brit Marling, who also co-wrote the film, and William Mapother do some strong work here, giving raw and humane performances, which goes a long way in helping the audience invest in their stories.

The movie that saved the Star Trek franchise is the perfect popcorn movie. Easily the best film in the original franchise. Ricardo Montalban steals the show as the title Khan, one of cinema's best villains. Also provides one of the best lines in movie history

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)
DVD- 1hr. 51min.
First Viewing
Strong entry in the Star Trek cinematic franchise. Features some great visual effects, and equally strong makeup. The cast is solid too, with the Borg Queen making for an effective villain. There is a bit of the "been there, done that" in here, but this is just an enjoyable movie.

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
Netflix- 1hr. 42min.
First Viewing
It's poorly paced, and the story could've been done on the show, but it's okay. Like all Trek flicks, there are some fun bits that keep things watchable.

The American President (1995)
DVD- 1hr. 53min.
First Viewing
A strong cast working from a strong script make this an entertaining political rom-com with actual brains. Watching this while I was also watching Sorkin's The West Wing did give me a bit of a sense dรฉjร vu though.

One of the few cases where going cheaper actually helped a film. Taking the crew out of space and stranding them on (then) present-day earth provides a welcome dose of levity to the proceedings. Add in some culture-clash humor, and this the funniest Star Trek ever, and easily one of the most entertaining.

Promised Land (2013)
Blu-Ray- 1hr. 47min.
First Viewing
Despite a timely topic (fracking) and a solid cast, there's not much going on in this movie. There's an earnestness that keeps it watchable, and at times gripping, but it never reaches the heights that seem possible.

The Guilt Trip (2012)
DVD- 1hr. 35min.

Rogen and Streisand are very well cast, but the film gives them absolutely nothing to work with. In moments that work, and I'm finding it hard to think of any, can be attributed to the leads.

Classic thrill-ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Essential Summer viewing.
Stray Note: There are few characters in the history of cinema as unlucky as Jeff Daniels' here.

For a Good Time, Call... (2012)
DVD- 1hr. 25min.

Squanders a solid premise and likable leads in favor of crude jokes that often land with a thud. The cast is good though, with a couple of very funny cameos.

If there's ever a need to inform future generations about the 1980s, look no further than this cheesefest. It's campy as hell, unintentionally funny, and arguably the most homoerotic film ever, but I'll be damned if it wasn't a fun ride; keeping me entertained from beginning to end.

Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
Netflix- 1hr. 36min.
First Viewing
Essentially the definition of a hit-and-miss movie. A lot of jokes get tossed out, with most of them landing. The entire ensemble makes the most of their scenes and, like all the great parodies, there's a clear affection for the type of movie the creative team is sending up.
