Lake Placid (1999)
My parents brought this one home once, and I was present for the "give the cow a drink" scene. At least I think it's Lake Placid, I never watched it all the way through. I can still hear that cow's screams...
Once I looked at this one and thought, oh, it's just a moth. Let's get a closer look. Then I saw it was a skull. The skull of a dead person. I was outa there!
They Live (1988)
Once I was brave enough to read the first part of the tagline. "You see them on the street." That was enough to scare me away again.
Tremors (1990)
I like this movie now. I don't think I made the connection between the movie and the poster until much later.
We rented movies from Blockbuster when I was little (5 or 6), and many of the good action films were on the other side of the dreaded horror aisles. My sister and I would make a mad dash for the other end, using our hands as blinders- but on occasion, that deep-rooted curiosity for scary things would get the better of us, and the terrifying images would be burnt into our memories for the rest of the night.
Some (Hellraiser, Dead Alive) would immediately freak me out, and I'd scamper off. Some (Nightmare on Elm Street, Silence of the Lambs, Lake Placid) I would glance at, and for a moment not see what was so scary. It would only take another second for me to see the tiny details of terror and send me running.
Here are the covers I still remember seeing (and fearing). Maybe someday I'll get the nerve to watch them!
*I remember a movie cover with the silhouette of a moth or bee or some insect, and also one with a woman's naked back, if anyone has any ideas what those may be. May or may not be horror movies, but they still scared me somehow.
