Straight Up (2019)
Incredibly well-written dialogue. It's like all the relationship building intimacy missing from 98% of rom-coms went into this movie like a full-force river. There is more people getting to really know each other in a minute of this movie than in two hours of most others. Funny, honest, quirky, original.
If you watch movies for the human element rather than to see things go boom, this is for you.
The plot revolves around a sexually ambiguous gay leaning guy who starts to date a woman with a past history of sexual trauma. It basically explores a lot of beautiful modern themes like soul mates, the line between friendship and romance, and asexuality.

A to Z (2014)
After Superstore ended, I wanted to see more of Ben Feldman’s face so I combed through his filmography and found this show. It was cancelled early and seems almost erased from the internet. YouTube basically has no clips of it. Streaming services are like huh? And searches for it will more often than not get you irrelevant results. And it’s a shame because it’s not a bad show at all. In fact, every episode is classic rom com material.
What it lacks is drama, specifically of the soap opera variety. What is has instead is Friends style everyday trials and tribulations that help you get to know the characters better.
The main couple is truly in love and good to each other. And it’s such a nice change to have a show sit in that, rather than have them break up as soon as they get near each other. And it’s also not insta-love. Even though these characters like each other there’s still that realistic getting to know each other and not assuming everything is gonna work out immediately. They go through trials and tribulations together. They are developed. And their love is truly shown through it all. That shouldn't be so rare on TV as it is. Because the getting together with someone isn't what most people actually experience as love.
It’s a great comfort show I can see myself rewatching.
Sure, it’s not the type I would count down the days to see the next episode of, but it’s warm and sweet and easy.
I think telling the audience from the beginning that your leads are going to break up as your literal theme song was a bit too much to ask investment-wise from an audience. Maybe in a movie such a dynamic would work better. I think that may have been part of why this show crashed.
Sad it was cancelled. I think in a different space it would have found a better audience.

I am in awe of the perfection of this show, at least up through the first couple episodes. Acting, casting, cinematography, music, writing, steam, romance, chemistry, even some deeper profound messages thrown in there. Complex, developing characters. Every beat works perfectly. This show is a gift.
I am not one to give praise easy and the early episodes of this are 10/10.
My only gripe so far is the continued romanticization of pedophilic teacher- student relationships as that’s super damaging but what to do.
It's also SO refreshing to see a same sex straight and gay character just be good friends. Gay friends are usually portrayed with the opposite sex. It's honestly amazing representation that means a lot.
Damian Hardung looks like he was made by AI. I have never seen a human being who screams main guy out of a fiction novel energy.
1x6- Okay some scenes are more weird than steam. Like sometimes the show does it amazing well and others I'm kind of grossed out.
Ep 6 definitely felt more rom com-y in that non-genuine human feeling way. But not bad. I appreciate how it wrapped a bit up before unravelling, letting people feel satisfied with S1 but also looking forward to S2.

The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020)
I feel like it could have been a rom com classic if it was just handled a bit better. Some parts really just felt like amateur film making.
-Realistic millennial dialogue was fun.
-I liked that it was a real friends to lovers, with the majority of the movie being focused on all her friendships. Female friendship rep too.
-A lot of narrative/ logic holes, cheesy writing in parts. Doesn't really make sense that she put a very particular type of art gallery into his hotel and then basically said you're welcome, it's staying there forever. Who's staying at The Heartbreak Hotel? I mean it's interesting but hardly great marketing.
-The lead actress makes this movie. She has such charisma and just raises the bar.
-The actors have chemistry but the dialogue can feel off-timed at parts.
-I'm so tired of the lazy writing of having the conflict 2/3rd of the way through. You could have many little conflicts or no big conflicts. You could write a natural story rather than this contrived stupidity. Do these writers respect themselves? I know that's harsh but seriously.
-Over all, cute movie that I might watch again but pretty mid.

The Now (2021)
The first few episodes were HILARIOUS. And I do not give that out lightly. Dark, absurd humor but not crass or so unrealistic it loses its punch. Amazing.
Αs the episodes go on though, it goes more and more off the rails in a way that's more boring than engaging bc it's too unrealistic. Plus starts to exhibit the absurdly terribly written female characters you’d expect from a male ‘raunchy’ comedy. Shame. Too quickly and conveniently wrapped up in the end and doesn't balance the comedy and drama well.

Sixteen Candles (1984)
Idk how this is a classic. It has not aged well. It’s incredibly freaking problematic and sexist. There’s literally a scene where the male lead talks about how he could assault his girlfriend while she was unconscious and he makes it seem like it’s something totally normal to do. And then he puts her in the car with another guy as if letting the other guy have his GF because he’s done with her. It’s so incredibly screwed up. I hate this guy.
The main romance is also insta-love with his only liking her because she seems to really like him. He doesn’t know her at all. He just likes her attention.
Basically he cheats on his GF, slams the door on her and refuses to open it so she has to cut off her own hair to get free, and then hands her unconscious over to another guy as a status symbol. Red flags by the barrel.
How is this a rom com and not a creepy thriller on teenage cruelty?

Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
It’s such a good movie with such a bad ending.
The charisma and chemistry of the leads is on fire. It has that classic movie feel because of the charismatic movie star energy both leads bring to the story. They’re just captivating.
It’s also genuinely funny.
But the ending feels like a satire of itself and very unsatisfying. Idk why this is such a common thing with movies where it’ll feel great up until a slapped on ending. Almost as if they ran out of time. As if the wrapping up of the story has the least priority, which is really such a disservice.

Origin (2023)
I don’t think I’ve ever watched a movie that made me cry over and over through out viewing it. It has such a beautiful heart and it is so layered and intelligent. It does its best when it shows rather than tells. The repetition it gets into is unnecessary and a little too much. But besides that- wow. What an excellent movie. So incredibly well acted as well. You can just tell that the actors were moved by the work.
It also portrays such beautiful respect for the humanity of people. And it uses that as a tool against racism. You can see it starkly when the MC opens up about her mother dying to humanize herself to a racist handiman. It’s so subtle but a masterclass message that the movie itself embodies in emphasizing the grief and humanity of the MC as she explores these topics.
The subtle micro aggressions the film shows speak so much louder than all the explicit messaging too.
The main theme of the film is that racism isn’t necessarily about race at all but caste oppression which can be attributed to race. It’s an interesting message but I also wish it had explored the OG questions first brought up of how so much can get lost in just saying “racism” as a generalization, when it is so complex and shows up in so many different ways.

Gun Shy (2000)
One of the most unique movies I've watched in years. And very funny, even if it's a dark humor that makes you look around and wonder, should I be laughing?
Basically about a traumatized cop with an anxiety disorder and gastrointestinal issues trying to bust some kind of money laundering drug cartel ring before he can finally retire and get some peace. He finds a helpful therapist, group therapy, and a manic pixie dream girl who has an unusual lack of fear and who encourages him to just focus on enjoying life before he dies.
The trauma they put this guy through though- idk I've just never seen something like that represented off the bat in a way that is so dark and realistic but also comedic in the absurdity.
The type of movie that encourages you to laugh at the ridiculousness of your trauma and enjoy life.
Drags quite a bit in the third act though and I think some run time could've been cut.
The ending doesn't really make sense given it wasn't set up, but it's cute.
It's a rule of the universe that any movie rated under 6/10 on IMDB is trash, but I have to defend this movie's honor. Not only is it a solid movie, it has so many unique aspects to it that feel refreshing vs. watching the same recycled plot points again. I mean if anything, it subverts expectations of the crime genre. Rather than having a totally suave policeman as its MC, this guy is just trying to hold his crap together, literally. And you have genuinely no idea where it's going to go.

Irish Wish (2024)
Paint by numbers predictability with no charm, charisma or chemistry to save it. I like LL but her face is frozen in botox and her likeability just doesn't really come through here. The relationships are shallow. They like the same authors so they're meant to be? Okay. A rom com with no intimacy or chemistry. What's the point of its existence?
