An average movie

Like any other actor, at some point, Russell Crowe thought he might as well direct his own movie and this feature was the end-result. Apparently, it was rather well received when it was released but, eventually, I thought it was a decent watch but not much more than that, to be honest. I mean, it was an interesting story, the directing was not bad and Russell Crowe gave a solid performance but I c... read more

Description: An inspiring tale of one man's life-changing journey of discovery. Joshua Connor (Russell Crowe), who, in 1919, goes in search of his three missing sons, last known to have fought against the Turks in the bloody Battle of Gallipoli. Arriving in Istanbul, he is thrust into a vastly different world, where he encounters others who suffered their own losses in the conflict: Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko), a strikingly beautiful, but guarded hotelier raising a child alone; her young, spirited son, Orhan (Dylan Georgiades), who finds a friend in Connor; and Major Hasan (Yilmaz Erdogan), a Turkish officer who fought against Connor's boys and m ... Apparently, it was rather well received when it was released but, eventually, I thought it was a decent watch but not much more than that, to be honest. I mean, it was an interesting story, the directing was not bad and Russell Crowe gave a solid performance but I can’t say I was ever really impressed by the whole thing. First of all, it was dealing with Gallipoli which was apparently a major battle/campaign during WWI involving Australia. Well, even though I have heard about Gallipoli, I’m not familiar at all with what happened there and I’m not sure if this movie was the best starting point to get acquainted with these events. BradWesley123's Movie Journal- August 2015 (29 movies items)

" DVD- 1hr. 53min. First Viewing Crowe's directorial debut is competently made, but falls short of the grand, old-fashioned epic it aspires to be. Crowe himself is superb in the lead, doing better in front of the camera than behind it, and the film looks tremendous. Unfortunately, the story is fairly contrived and, while starting out pretty strongly, peters out towards the end. "
