Gravedad y abstracción excesiva, no es un país determinado, simplemente el quiebre de un héroe, que al final ya no importa si muere o queda libre, en realidad, muere su voluntad, según la película y según lo que logra Hawkins, oponiendo psicología a fe.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner plays out less like an actual film and more like a televised stage performance – mainly interiors, two great actors doing a two-hander, and an overall lack of specifics that plays better on stage than in a movie camera. Unfolding in an unnamed Eastern European country after World War II, The Prisoner is a stripped-down struggle of wills between two archetypal characters. The Cardinal (Alec Guinness) has been arrested and, charged with a series of phony crimes, is subjected to intense questioning by the Interrogator (Jack Hawkins), a man who was once his friend and ally in the struggle against the Nazi occupation. Knowing that the Cardinal won’t break under torture or confinement, the Interrogator searches for a way to elicit a confession from his antagonist.

The Prisoner

“The Prisoner plays out less like an actual film and more like a televised stage performance – mainly interiors, two great actors doing a two-hander, and an overall lack of specifics that plays better on stage than in a movie camera. When and where exactly does this story take place? What’s the wider theme/point at play here? There’s so much left up to the viewer that practically any reading is accurate given the nebulous nature of the material.   This nebulous nature opens the material up to a wide variety of interpretations, and a glimpse of its reception at the time proves this point. The Venice Film Festival rejected it as anti-communist, Ireland banned it for being pro-communist, Italy rejected it for being anti-Catholic, and all of that seems like hysterical pearl-clutching.” read more
