Not the greatest pirate movie

Well, this movie isn't really good or bad. I think 5 stars are a fair rating because the plot isn't really exiting and some typical elements of pirate movies are missing (f.e. big sea fights ). The best reason to watch this movie is the performance of Walter Matthau who plays Captain Red in a brilliant way.

An average movie

I’m pretty sure I already saw this movie but it was at least 20 years ago so I was really eager to check it out again. Even though it had a rather lame reputation, I always thought  it was actually a decent pirate movie, at least, as far as I could remember but after re-watching the damned thing, I have to agree, it wasn’t really good after all. I mean, it was visually pretty neat with some n... read more

Description: Captain Red runs a hardy pirate ship with the able assistance of Frog, a dashing young French sailor. One day Capt. Red is captured and taken aboard a Spanish galleon, but thanks to his inventiveness, he raises the crew to mutiny, takes over the ship, and kidnaps the niece of the governor of Maracaibo. The question is, can he keep this pace up? ... (more)

" The film, featured a earlier performance by Charlotte Lewis, and a cameo by Ian Dury. Currently, Pirates isn’t available on DVD and or Blu Ray, in North America. It and Cutthroat Island’s dismal box office performances scared studio off of making pirate movies. That is until, a certain Johnny Depp and Disney film came along. Pirates is a 1986 adventure comedy film written by Gérard Brach, John Brownjohn, and Roman Polanski and directed by Polanski. It was inspired by Polanski's love o"

Even though it had a rather lame reputation, I always thought  it was actually a decent pirate movie, at least, as far as I could remember but after re-watching the damned thing, I have to agree, it wasn’t really good after all. I mean, it was visually pretty neat with some nice costumes and some great sets (especially the Neptune looked pretty awesome. It was a full scale ship that did cost almost $10 million). Walter Matthau was also a great choice to play the lead part, even if his English accent was not convincing and even rather cringe-inducing. So, it seems that Polanski had already the most important ingredients at his disposal but he apparently forgot to bring” read more
