Astounding visual masterpiece...

"There is no such thing as political murder, political bombing or political violence. There is only criminal murder, criminal bombing and criminal violence."

Nominally, Hunger is a motion picture about the life of IRA activist Bobby Sands who died in 1981 as the result of a hunger strike. But this startling feature film debut of British visual artist Steve McQueen (no relation to th... read more

A very good movie

The war between the British government and the IRA was at the end of the 70's quite ruthless and this movie managed to display how far both sides would go to reach their goals. It was indeed a merciless movie which didn't take any side but neutrally displayed the facts. For a directing début, I thought it was pretty impressive. Indeed, you could see that McQueen was originally an artist as, in th... read more

Hunger was the debut full-length movie for Steve McQueen, and it is one of those movies where you have to watch it because it's a debut for a promising director, but it just burnt into my mind, to be honest i wish that i haven't seen it, it was too painful to watch.

It tells the story of Bobby Sands, an IRA (Irish Republican Army) member, who were imprisoned in HM Prison Maze, and w... read more

Description: HUNGER is the stunningly assured debut feature from Turner Prize-winning visual artist Steve McQueen. Winner of the 2008 Cannes Camera d’Or among other top international prizes, the film is a work of astonishing precision co-written by acclaimed Irish playwright Enda Walsh and starring Michael Fassbender (300, Tarantino’s upcoming INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS) in an unflinchingly passionate turn. HUNGER was an official selection of the Toronto, Telluride and New York film festivals. In 1981, a deadly serious battle takes place in the infamous H-block of Belfast’s Maze Prison. Republican inmates, led by Bobby Sands (Fassbender), re ... (more)

"22.2. HBO Hienosti kuvattu sekä pitkiä staattisia ottoja että hätäisiä tarkoituksenmukaisia liikkeitä ja leikkauksia käyttäen. Taustoja ei selitellä, eikä kukaan järin puhelias ole muutoinkaan. Katsoja on sivustaseuraajana järjettömässä väkivallan kierteessä."

PopMatter's Essential Film Performances - 2012 (50 movies items)

"THE DARK SIDE Michael Fassbender In Hunger, Steve McQueen’s elliptical, brutal, and utterly devastating 2008 film about the martyring of Irishman Bobby Sands (among others) to the cause of republicanism in 1981, Michael Fassbender turns in one of recent cinema’s most astounding performances. Playing (but one wants to say inhabiting) one of the most famous figures in the long and bloody history of the Troubles, Fassbender breathes into Sands an emotional sensitivity, a wiry electricity, and "
