I first read this as a book years ago and was a little nervous when the movie came out over all I liked the movie but the ending was not what I remember

Russel is a high school student who is dealing with the fact the he is gay and then he meets Kevin, a closeted football player and the two become close. Accidentally, the president of the so called Geography Club catches them kissing and later she asks Russel to join the club which is secretly a Gay-Straight Alliance Club.
