Caesar and Cleopatra is a strong case study of a lavish production with a sluggish and fitfully dull outcome. The main problem, which is obvious to anyone viewing the film, is that the entire spectacle causes the viewer to be removed from the characters and their societal drama. (OK/YT) Begins well, with the monologue of Caesar to the sphynx and the apartion of Vivien between the paws. Then, all the little and historic intrigue, with Ptatateeta (Robson) and a swashbuckling Granger, gets somwhat tiresome. Rains leaves Egypt as gratuitously as he got there...
