A good movie
Review
"'71" (2014)
Superficially, this movie is a nail-biting thriller. The way it presents an atmosphere of ever-present danger is nothing short of perfect. I wasn't clear on the reason behind it all, though; you really need to know the history beforehand going into this movie. Wanting to shoot British soldiers on sight is one thing, but this group of Nationalists goes so far as to ... read more

“To be honest, I can’t remember why I wanted to check this movie in the first place. I guess it seemed to have a decent reputation so I thought I might as well check it out. Anyway, it turned out to be a gritty thriller with an interesting historical background. Basically, what you get to see is the main character going from one spot to another, trying to make it through the night, and not much else to be honest. Concerning Jack O'Connell, he was not bad and it was a nice touch to see him with his little brother who was there obviously to explain why this guy would choose to join the army but, eventually, his character was actually barely developed. "I've been wanting to watch this for a few years now. Jack O'Connell is one of my newer favorites after his great performances. He was good in this too. Belfast as a setting in the 70's and the two fighting sides brought intensity and unnerving feeling to the action. "
" DVD- 1hr. 39min. First Viewing A thrilling quasi-history lesson, '71 is a strong effort that loses effort only when it lets off the throttle. Jack O'Connell is strong here, doing just enough character work to add some personal attachment so that the thrill have more weight. The action, as noted, is the film's selling point, and it does not disappoint. "
"When: August 13th First-Time Viewing: Yes. How: DVD from the library. What'd I Think?: Mostly engaging, well acted war drama, but suffers from a feeling of predictability, and isn't as emotionally engaging as it should be. My Rating: 7/10 Other Notes: NA. "
