Some games can get away without any bgm played, whilst others would have been lesser games had there been no music to complement the action. Street Fighter would be the latter example. In fact the soundtrack to II is so iconic it'll be remixed and revised to the end of time just like the original World Warrior. The characters and their themes have been woven into the fabric of our cultural landscape.
The follow up prequels, the Alpha series, in general don't hold a candle against Shimomura's and Abe's cherished melodies, but there were tracks that were cool in their own right. The industrialised direction it took on the third installment was somewhat of a misstep however. Before, stage themes had real personality and represented the character's distinct traits and fit well with the stage's surroundings. The sexy R Mika deserves a much better track than what they gave her in the form of that anaemic racket. The instrumentation was just too similar for most stages and it's one of the reasons why I preferred Alpha 2 over it.
III was a clear return to form and I was pretty bowled over by its drum & bass, acid jazz and trip hop infused beats. They won't get the adrenaline going, but most of them create a nice relaxing positive vibe within the environment.
IV just doesn't know what it wants to be and was a huge travesty. The only tracks that had any kind of definition to them were the Old Temple Stage and Snowy Rail Yard Stage, even then they were still sub-par.
