Double Indemnity (1952)
FAVORITE LINE: "I killed him for money and for a woman. And I didn't get the money and I didn't get the woman. Pretty isn't it?" (Fred MacMurray). George Raft allegedly turned down the leading role of Walter Neff (excellently played in the film by Fred MacMurray). Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson were both outstanding in this film classic directed by BILLY WILDER.
classic movie buff's rating:

Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Montgomery Clift turned down the leading role before it was offered to William Holden. FAVORITE LINE: "I am big. It's the pictures that got small." (Gloria Swanson).
classic movie buff's rating:

Ace in the Hole (1951)
Another BILLY WILDER classic with Kirk Douglas and Jan Sterling both on top form. FAVORITE LINE: "How'd you like to make a thousand dollars a day, Mr Boot? I'm a thousand dollar a day newspaper man. You can have me for nothing." (Kirk Douglas).
classic movie buff's rating:

One of Hitchcock's early black and white successes (1935) during his British period. Remade twice (1959 and 1978) in colour but neither version comes up to the Hitchcock original.
classic movie buff's rating:

North by Northwest (1959)
It has been reported in some Hitchcock biographies that James Stewart desperately wanted the role of Roger Thornhill in this film but Hitchcock thought he looked too old for the part. In actual fact Stewart was a few years younger than Grant. When Stewart signed up for "Anatomy of a Murder" this gave Hitchcock to cast Grant whom he had wanted all along! Jessie Royce Landis played Cary Grant's mother but in fact they were both born in the same year! FAVORITE LINE: "You gentlemen aren't really trying to kill my son are you?" (Jessie Royce Landis).

FAVORITE LINE: "Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges." (Alfonso Bedoya).
classic movie buff's rating:

The Music Man (1962)
ROBERT PRESTON is "The Music Man" in the film version of his sensational Broadway role.
classic movie buff's rating:

The Maltese Falcon (1941) (2021)
FAVORITE LINE: "The stuff that dreams are made of." (Humphrey Bogart).
classic movie buff's rating:

The Jolson Story (1946)
The greatest Hollywood musical biography ever. Larry Parks was amazing as Al Jolson.
classic movie buff's rating:

Jolson Sings Again (1949)
Much praised sequel to "The Jolson Story" with Larry Parks again in the lead although Jolson desperately wanted the part himself!!
classic movie buff's rating:

Tick Tock (2000)
I saw this film on television recently just by accident and was pleasantly surprised by the fast moving plot and good performances by its stars. A tale of murder and intrigue with many twists, turns, shocks and surprises throughout. A suspenseful thriller but with a modern touch and a very unusual idea whereby the action keeps "going back in time" which kept you on the edge of your seat. See this film if you can - you won't be disappointed!
classic movie buff's rating:

The films of the forties and fifties are my main interest. These featured the real Hollywood stars such as Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Alan Ladd, James Stewart, Burt Lancaster, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Mitchum, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Betty Grable, Alice Faye, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Ford, Bette Davis, Richard Widmark, Dana Andrews, Cary Grant, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Barbara Stanwyck, John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, and too many others to mention here. The present day stars just don't seem to have the magic of those legends for me. How lucky we are to still be able to enjoy the classic movies and stars of the forties and fifties thanks to television, video and DVD.
However, there are some good movies being made today if you take the time to select them carefully. Some films I have enjoyed recently are "Tick Tock" (a most unusual fast moving thriller), "My Cousin Vinny", "Titanic", "Midnight Run", "Goodfellas", "Casino", "Identity", "Biloxi Blues", "The Untouchables", "The Prestige", "Red Rock West", "Fargo", "The Score", "The Green Mile", the "Indiana Jones" movies, the "Die Hard" series, and of course "The Godfather" and "The Godfather - part two".
