A decade ago, the very knowledgeable critic Jonathan Rosenbaum did a personal selection of 1000 films, calling it his canon: I'm using the same term for my own shorter version (I did 1000 elsewhere). I hope it's of interest to people who like exploring international cinema, with so many hidden treasures. I'm behind with watching films from the last year, but I do love a lot of older classics. There are a lot here from the 50s and 60s. The relative lack of recent films may be more a reflection of my taste than the quality of modern cinema (it's all subjective), but I don't think this is a Hollywood golden age. An ageing fogey, I generally prefer drama to action films and horror. I'm including two of my childhood favourites, El Cid and It's a Mad Mad Mad World, which may or may not be worthy otherwise.
