The Simpsons: Family Therapy (1989)
I give the first 10 seasons of The Simpsons (most fans say 9 seasons) and the Simpsons shorts a โ โ โ โ โ rating. If The Simpsons ended there it would be my favorite show.
This episode maybe inspired one of my favorite episodes called There's No Disgrace Like Home.
Homer wonders why his family isn't ordinary, and they use electroshock therapy on each other.

I wish The Simpsons didn't shy away from making dark, poignant satire and genuinely moving episodes like One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish.

Mr. Saturn's rating:

Monster (2004)

A great humanistic psychological thriller. Only Alfred Hitchcock's best films are more suspenseful for me.
Mr. Saturn's rating:

Cowboy Bebop (1998)

The best space western. Cowboy Bebop is even better than Firefly. If you enjoyed Firefly and want an equally fun show with a little more depth, you should see Cowboy Bebop.
Mr. Saturn's rating:

Mushishi (2005)

Mushi-Shi is a fantastic edo period drama about an adventurer who is a master of invisible organisms living inside everything called mushi.
Mr. Saturn's rating:

Serial Experiments Lain (1998)

...the multidimensional wavelength of the existential self: the relationship between self and the world. (source)
Serial Experiments Lain is surreal and sometimes elusive and complex, but it has lessons about real life and identity. The story becomes cohesive and meaningful if you stick with it.
Mr. Saturn's rating:

The Halloween Tree (1993) (1993)

This film's rated so highly because of nostalgia and admiration for the story; it's not very entertaining for adults and that's fine, but it fascinated me when I was a child.
