Clark Gable and Carole Lombard

Carole: “God knows I love Clark (Gable), but he’s the worst lay in the town.”

Carole: “Pa comes first.”

Carole: “I’ll work a few more years, and then I want a family. I’ll let Pa be the star, and I’ll stay home, darn the socks and look after the kids.”

Carole: “I don’t give a damn about me. I want to take care of my pappy; give him everything he wants.”

Carole: “We never do anything much, but we have a lot of laughs and Pa is relaxed and happy.”

Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic

Christian: "The character is born long before the first day of shooting and so [my wife] had to be married to so many different characters over our marriage. I know that it truly would be impossible to do it without her." Saying he owes "everything to her," Bale adds, "She's [Sibi] such a good, strong woman."

Christian: "I think trying too hard to be sexy is the worst thing in the world a woman can do. What I love about my wife is that she's a really strong-minded, stubborn, fiery woman. I find that sexier than anything else."

Christian: "The whole marriage thing I actually consider fun. It's surprised me, but I enjoy saying "my wife." I made a guy apologize to her the other night because he was rude. After saying, "You, apologize to my wife," I couldn't stop laughing because it felt great to say it."

Colin Firth and Livia Giuggiolli

Livia: “We’re not moving to Hollywood, we’re going back home and he’s still the man I married,” she told Grazia. “He’ll still put out the bins and leave his socks on the floor. It’s just now he has an Oscar, and that is amazing.”

Colin: "Because I had a lot of strikes against me. I was 10 years older nearly, English, didn't speak the language. Already had a child. I was an actor. I mean, the list really does get very, very bad so I had to fix the language. It was one thing I could deal with and, you know, there's nothing like communicating with people in their own tongue."

Colin: "We're very committed on a daily basis to how we deal with our family lives. But the real secret is time - we have to make sure that we spend enough time together. Every relationship in life you're going to have to take care of, there's a marathon factor to it."

Livia: “We’re a great match because I’m the ballbreaker and he’s the brains.”

Colin: "I'm married to an Italian who is a phenomenal cook, and far more fastidiously tidy than I am. I tend to make an outrageous mess in the kitchen. I like to think the results are OK but the process is pretty grisly ... I think the thing that's required the most courage that I've done in the name of romance was getting married, to be honest. If you're as scared of marriage as I was, it's a pretty romantic thing to have done. That and learning her language, I suppose ... Her English is better than my Italian will ever be. But if you're going to live your life with someone you should, as a mark of respect, try to learn their way of conceptualising things."

Colin: "They say opposites attract, but the truth is it's never that simple. Not all Italians are fiery and not all Englishmen are repressed. But it was love at first sight for me. I immediately felt she was amazing, and it was very quick. It was instinctive, inexplicable, and I've never looked back ... It's probably to do with committing yourself to something you can't undo—like having a child ... Having a relationship with someone cannot be an egotistical process if it's to survive. Children and marriage: nothing comes close to that. "

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.
