Seven (1995)

DVD- 2hrs. 7min.
First Viewing
Bleak detective story featuring strong direction, writing, and performance (especially Kevin Spacey as one of cinema's greatest monsters).

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

DVD- 2hrs. 22min.

I always expected this to be an overrated film. I was wrong. Exceptional in every department.

Days of Heaven (1978)

Netflix- 1hr. 33min.

While I've never been a huge Malick fan, this is pretty solid. The visuals are extraordinary, and the score is majestic.

Just really boring. There are some solid ideas here and there, but it's all so poorly executed, the any potential it has dies the second it's introduced. Also, that scene where Nicole Kidman smashes that Asian kid's head off the bedpost made me laugh my ass off.

Hitchcock was the master of suspense, and with Vertigo he provides the best evidence of the title, crafting arguably his finest film.

V for Vendetta (2006)

DVD- 2hrs. 12min.
First Viewing
While the social commentary is at times a bit heavy-handed, V For Vendetta is an uncommonly smart and ambitious action film with strong direction, and a solid cast.

The Apartment (1960)

DVD- 2hrs. 5min.
First Viewing
Funny without being over-the-top, and sweet without being saccharine; The Apartment is the type of romantic comedy that you wish Hollywood was still able to make.

Apocalypse Now (1979)

DVD- 2hrs. 33min.
First Viewing
The definitive Vietnam War movie; beautifully illustrating the indifference and ambivalence of the war.

Coming from Oliver Stone, I was anticipating a damning indictment of the 37th U.S. President. I was surprised when I found it to be a more sympathetic tragedy; portraying Nixon as a man with greatness in his grasp, but eventually succumbing to fear and paranoia. Over length drags it down a bit though.
