Engine Sentai Go-onger (2008)

Go-onger is definitely an acquired taste. If you believe that superheroes should be serious business like The Dark Knight, this is not the series for you. (And honestly, I'm questioning why you're watching sentai to begin with.) However, the character development is handled amazingly. Especially for a show with TWENTY main characters!
Also, despite the characters being mostly lighthearted and comedic, the show itself does not stick to any particular mood.

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (2004)

I know what you're thinking, how can someone honestly take a show seriously when the Chief is a giant, talking dog (and the Supreme Commander is a giant bird)? And to be fair, I thought the same thing. But after a while you really stop seeing him as a furry, and start seeing him as just another character... that happens to have blue fur.
Also, by the end of the season there are 10 heroes... and they are actually split down the middle by gender! (Even if the two extra males are regulars, while the three extra females are one-shot Rangers.)

Jūken Sentai Gekiranger (2007)

I'll be honest, if you have an irrational fear of furries, you're going to want to stay away from this season. And heck, Bat Li is kinda creepy looking to be honest. If you hate Sharkie, though, you have no soul.
But really, Gekiranger is one of those seasons where as you watch it, things are just kinda good enough to keep watching. Then, after stopping to take a step back, you start to realize just how great it really was.

Episode 26 could have been a good episode, but the way it was handled was very crappy. Sandayuu came off as extremely condescending and sexist towards Tsuruhime, calling her weak because she's a girl and giving Tsuruhime help to retrieve her scroll. And this is the ONLY time Tsuruhime is treated like this, so it just kind of slaps you in the face with how shitty it is.

Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger

Gokaiger is a case of yes, there can be too much of a good thing. As much as I like the cameos from previous Rangers, they really take away from the current team's development. My pre-series opinions of the characters are EXACTLY THE SAME as my post-series opinions. It's kinda sad. And don't even get me started on how much they undermine the stock episodes.

Episode 23 makes me rage. The relationship between Ahim and Luka seems outright OOC in this episode. Then they had to blatantly force GoPink into it, which comes off as the most awkward guest spot in the series. Add in the fact that this is considered the "girl power" episode, in a franchise with some amazing female duos, and they don't Gokai Change into a single one.

They may not be "bad", but negatives far outweigh the positives. They generally only have no more than two lead characters that I'm really invested in, with maybe a third growing on me. The plot pretty much does not interest me at all (or I only care about the plot, and roll my eyes at character focus). There is probably not a stand out episode that I would go back to and rewatch while in a bad mood.

Bottom of the Barrel Tier

While not completely irredeemable, they are the absolute bottom of what I want in a season. While they could still have a character that I absolutely love, the season itself could range anywhere between a complete slog to get through to offensive and rage inducing. Sometimes in the same season!

Hikari Sentai Maskman (1987)

Maskman is the definition of filler. If you look up "filler" in the dictionary, what you'll find is a picture of this team staring back at you.
Don't let anyone fool you, the titular heroes are NOT the protagonists of this story. They actually have nothing to do with the story. They are only involved because Red is dating one of the actual protagonists. The twins are the real protagonists and one of them is literally on ice for the majority of the series.
Nothing Kenta, Akira, Haruka or Momoko do is at all relevant. They are nothing more than toys to buy. That is it. You could switch out every single one of them with a lamp and absolutely nothing would change about the story. In fact, I would kind of prefer Lampman to what we got to be honest.
