For those who have not heard of it, the Bechdel test is a simple test to show womens' representation in film today.
The rules are:
1. There must be at least two women in the film--
2. Who talk to each other--
3. About something other than a man.
The reason for the test is simple. There is no good reason for there to be such an uneven representation of women vs men in film today. And usually, a movie with more than two women in it is marketed as a "girly" film more often than not.
I'm going group this list in four sections: Those that completely pass the test, Those that pass all but #3, Those that pass only #1, and those that Fail completely.
I'm also going to add a few of my own rules as well--I think many women do, because the Bechdel test doesn't really measure for quality or equality in roles, because one, it was created back in the 80s, when the number of movies that passed the test was much closer to zero than it is now, and two, it doesn't really measure for quality of interaction. These won't affect their rank as far as pass/fail, but the "better" films will go to the top of each section.
Codicils to #1:
A: The two characters have names
B: The two characters are more than tertiary characters to the plot
C: One or more of the women is a main character/major player in the plot
D: The movie's main plot is not a romance
Codicils to #2:
A: The two must talk for more than a few words, not just in passing
B: The more conversations the better
Codicils to #3:
A: Where talking about a man is i: needy/lustful, ii: how best to deal with/please him, iii: ranting about the evils of men
B: Again, more non-male conversations are better
