Melyvn Bragg became life long friends with Ken when he joined him on the production team of Huw Wheldon's Monitor arts series on BBC Television. Some of his early television work was in collaboration with Ken, for whom he wrote the The Debussy Film (1965) and Isadora Duncan, the Biggest Dancer in the World (1967) and The Music Lovers (1970). Bragg later commissioned and co-wrote with Russell The Clouds of Glory films William and Dorothy and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Other commissions by Bragg include A British Picture (Bragg makes an appearance above) and The Planets for The Southbank Show.

Master costume designer, Shirley and Ken were married for 22 years, had five children (Xavier, James, Alex, Victoria and Toby) and she worked alongside him on his early fledgling photography and films all the way through to Valentino. Apart from designing costumes for nearly all his major films and BBC productions, she appears in his very first amateur film entitled "Peepshow" and countless photos.
