Play a wizard trying to conquer 2 broken worlds. Most content of any commercial 4x game in the form of spells and unit abilities at the expense of balance.

C-evo - PC Games
Freeware Civilization clone. It has much less content than most entries on this list but it has the best AI and interface. Literally the best. While I played it for less than 5 hours it was the funnest 5 hours I ever got from a video game.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization - PC Games
The 1990 version, freecol which is decent and this. Like the original because I could sell guns to natives near enemy, each founding father (tech) drastically changed game and setting up supply chains.

5 main entries plus loads of add-ons and 4 spinoff series, 2 of which are covered in this list. Also 3 free remakes. Civ4's main strength is it's user made addons which, together, have more content than any game on this list. Requires it's own list. www.listal.com/list/civilization-spinoffs

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic - PC Games
The addon to 2nd game of AoW series. Lots like master of magic but more focus on heroes.

Lot like Distant worlds but no automation. Great race animations and good ship design and combat. Seems to be getting LOTS of mods and multiplayer planned.

Distant Worlds - PC Games
PRT simulationy. Automate anything to the point of removing all grind or playing as a lone ship captain. 2d, real-time. Originally the enemy and helper ai were similar but with the latest add-on Shadows this changed and the difference seems to break my enjoyment. No multiplayer or real mods left the price point too high but at least without Shadows it was worth my time.

Butt ugly but decent otherwise. Only decent technology and economy while diplomacy and any victory other than complete conquest does not exist. NEVER PLAY WITH ALL VIEW ON BC AI MOVES TAKE TOO LONG.

Sword of the Stars - PC
Over world is nothing but a pain while the ship combat and design is nice for a while, lack of proper info and pausing micromanagement winning the space combat makes that fun die fast.

Lots like Sword of stars; all about the 3d ship combat and design. Except worse in almost every way. No depth or complexity. Worth about 2 hours for ship design fan if you can figure out how to immediately ignore the economy.

World Empires Live - PC Games
A 4x but rather simple. Designed to be played multiplayer with very strict per turn time limit. I could not sign up so I could not even play a single player game besides the tutorial.

Malkari (PC-CD) - PC Games
I give up on this one. Only one site has it and a single player game won't start. Gives -1 error. The torrent wont work either. I guess this game is a prequel to Aurora and has the same 'moving space objects' like aurora, Fragile alliance and alien legacy.

4x strategy is my favorite genera and I have played just about every single entry. I'm an expert.
Compared to other strategy games 4x is defined by its scope, complexity, economy, diplomacy options and the ability to win peacefully. Exploration, economy, reaserch, combat diplomacy. Psudo-4x games get their own list while trash browser games i will just ignore.
Series are represented by only their best game decided by my opinion. There are a few exceptions.
