The 1950's got off to a strong start for 20th Century Fox with their release of the decade's first Academy Award winning Best Picture "All About Eve", an ensemble drama that is widely considered to be one of the finest ever made about the backstage world of show business. Most of the studio's top box office/contract stars from the 40's remained with Fox and remained very popular throughout most of the 50's. During this time, a new major star and worldwide sex symbol would emerge: Marilyn Monroe, a very popular box office attraction who regularly excelled in both comedic and dramatic roles. Her films brought Fox some of their biggest profits of the decade. With the threat of television looming, the studios all scrambled to think of new creative and gimmicky ways to keep bringing audiences into the theaters. The use of 3D technology in many movies was a popular gimmick but Fox was interested in creating a similar visual effect/illusion without the need for any 3D glasses. That technique would be achieved with the creation and introduction of CinemaScope, a then groundbreaking widescreen process that Fox would use on nearly all of their A-level features from 1953's "The Robe" onward for the next decade. CinemaScope's success would quickly be adopted by the other studios who would either license the rights to use CinemaScope on their own films or create similar screen processes of their own (i.e. Paramount Pictures with their VistaVision technique). All these successes and many others would keep Fox remaining consistently profitable for another decade.
Those highs and lows are all compiled here in this latest chapter of the 20th Century Fox story. Here are all 178 feature films that Fox would release to theaters from 1950-1954.
