Going into the second half of the 1930's and the main years of Hollywood's widely renowned "Golden Age", MGM was stronger than ever. It earned the position of Hollywood's most powerful studio during this time and maintained that title throughout the next two decades. Veteran stars Clark Gable (at the peak of his box office powers here), Greta Garbo, Jackie Cooper, Joan Crawford, Lewis Stone, Myrna Loy, Norma Shearer, Robert Montgomery, Wallace Beery and William Powell among others continued their hit making streaks as the decade progressed. Of course, a wide variety of newcomers entered the MGM contract roster as well and moved on to star in many successful films for the studio. They included Frank Morgan, Greer Garson, James Stewart, Jeanette MacDonald, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Mickey Rooney, Nelson Eddy, Robert Taylor, Spencer Tracy and Walter Pidgeon. With that versatile stable of star power, dozens of Academy Award nominations and wins (including three Best Picture wins during this five year span) and its annual box office returns typically ranking among Hollywood's highest, MGM breezed through the second half of the 30's racking up hit after hit.
That entire slate of films, the scores of triumphs, the occasional flops and the underrated hidden gems, are all collected here in this latest chapter of the MGM story. The complete listing of every MGM film released from the beginning of 1935 to the end of 1939 is included with additional notes on wide release dates, co-production companies and major Academy Award wins (where applicable on those last two) listed on each entry.
