The rise of the independent film movement and the countless filmmakers who have taken part in it owe a lot of their success to the "old school indie" company whose own success would make it more possible for them to get their films distributed: United Artists, also known simply as UA. Known as "the company built by the stars", UA was founded in 1919 by four titans of the silent movie era: comedy legend Charlie Chaplin, suave dashing leading man Douglas Fairbanks, lovely versatile actress and top box office draw Mary Pickford and influential director D.W. Griffith. All of them had enough power, success and wealth by this time to finally break free from the creative restrictions of the major studios and fully finance and take full creative charge of their own pictures. UA was to be a production outlet for all of their own current and future films and would also serve as a distributor for any independent producer who preferred not to deal with any of the majors for financing. UA quickly scored major success with several of their founders' films and would soon line up distribution deals with various other producers, most notably Samuel Goldwyn.
All of the feature film releases of UA's first decade in business are compiled here. A vast majority of them still survive and continue to be enjoyed by classic Hollywood fans and film historians to this day.
